LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Keir Gilchrist, who plays Toni Collette's son on Showtime's "United States of Tara," has nabbed the lead role in a coming-of-age film from the filmmakers of "Half Nelson."
"It's Kind of a Funny Story," a comedy-drama based on Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel, centers on 16-year-old Craig (Gilchrist) who, stressed out from the demands of being a teenager, checks himself into a mental health clinic. He learns that the youth ward is closed and finds himself stuck in the adult ward.
Gilchrist joins a cast that includes Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts and Viola Davis. Also coming aboard are Zoe Kravitz, Aasif Mandavi, Lauren Graham and Jim Gaffigan.
The Focus Features release comes from writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who made their breakthrough with the 2006 drama "Half Nelson," starring Ryan Gosling.
Shooting begins in New York in early December.
