U.N. Darfur text sends wrong signal on Darfur crimes: U.S.

Thu Jul 31, 3:06 PM ET

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.S. spokesman said on Thursday that part of a resolution on Darfur raising worries about a possible indictment of Sudan's president for war crimes there sent the wrong signal to someone who oversaw genocide.

Western powers agreed to wording in a resolution extending the mandate of peacekeepers in Darfur that makes clear the council is ready to discuss suspending any future International Criminal Court indictment of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for genocide in the interest of peace in Darfur.

Asked how the United States would vote on the resolution when the council meets to vote on it later on Thursday, a spokesman for the U.S. mission to the United Nations said Washington had a big problem with the British-drafted text that was amended to accommodate African concerns about the ICC.

"The ICC language in the resolution sends the wrong signal to a man who presided over genocide," said U.S. spokesman Richard Grenell. He declined to elaborate.
