McCain aides say that upon the senator's arrival in Des Moines, Iowa, this morning, he will address the deepening crisis in the Caucasus region.
According to local news accounts, Georgian troops have attacked the capital of South Ossetia, a pro-Russian breakaway part of the country. The Russians have sent their own troops into the region, as well as planes that have come under attack from Georgian forces.
McCain has been an outspoken critic of the Putin-dominated Kremlin, urging that Russia be removed from the G-8.
