Hillary: Obama ‘closing’ the deal

Sen. Hillary Clinton said Monday that Barack Obama has just about wrapped up a victory in the presidential campaign.

Asked on NBC’s “Today Show” what Obama has to do to close the deal, Clinton said, “I think he's closing it.”

Clinton credited Obama’s response to the financial crisis for solidifying the choice for undecided voters.

“I think the way he's conducted himself the last few weeks during this economic crisis has gotten a lot of people in his camp who might not have been there otherwise. I hear it all the time. People say, ‘Well, I don't have any choice now,’ or, ‘You know, I'm convinced.’ And he just has to keep doing that.”

During her Democratic primary run against Obama, the New York senator warned voters that the Illinois Democrat would not be able to withstand attacks from Republicans as the general election heated up. But Clinton said Monday that the financial crisis has blunted Republican attacks, giving Obama the room he needs to push his message.

“People don't have the luxury of paying attention to that,” Clinton said of attacks against Obama.

“Absent this economic crisis, you know, who knows? But the reality is, we're in this economic crisis. And every time President Bush gets on TV, John McCain's numbers drop.”
