The Al Smith dinner: Senators got jokes

Featured Topics:

Both Barack Obama and John McCain did their best attempt at stand-up comedy at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner in New York City Thursday night.

They were good. REALLY good.

For those not familiar with the annual event, the dinner is technically a fundraiser for charity. But more importantly for our entertainment, it's also a bit of a roast. Both presidential candidates took their turn at the mic and proved that the campaign hasn't caused them to completely lose their sense of humor.

A sample of the candidates' comedic stylings:

McCain:
- "This is as good a place as any to make a major announcement. It's true that this morning I've dismissed my entire team of advisers. All their positions will be held by a man named Joe the Plumber."

- "I'm the underdog, but there are signs of hope. I can't shake the feeling that some people here are pulling for me. I am delighted to see you here tonight, Hillary."

Obama:
- "I got my name Barack from my father. It's actually Swahali for 'That one.' I got my middle name obviously from someone who didn't think I'd run for president."

- "My greatest weakness? It's possible that I'm a little too awesome."
