Top story overnight: Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi defied a warning by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and urged supporters to stage more protests over the disputed presidential election. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard threatened to halt all rallies and told demonstrators to prepare for a "revolutionary confrontation" if they take to the streets again. Over the weekend, a video of a young protester's murder hit the Web, prompting people from all over the globe to post spontaneous tributes on various social networks.
In other news: A suicide car bomber drove into a convoy of vehicles in the troubled Russian region of Ingushetia, The Associated Press reported. Ingush president Yunus Bek Yevkurov was critically wounded in the attack; two of his bodyguards were killed. Yevkurov was the third top official to be wounded or killed in the region bordering Chechnya in the past three weeks.
Medical examiners have identified 11 bodies retrieved from the Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic three weeks ago. According to The AP, dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples were used to identify 10 Brazilian men and women. The eleventh body was of a non-Brazilian man; his name and nationality were not released. At the time of this writing, 50 bodies have been retrieved from the ocean.
Finally, Tropical Storm Andres formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico. Andres is the first named storm of the 2009 Eastern Pacific hurricane season. Forecasters say the storm could become a hurricane in the coming days.
Most-read stories overnight: An SUV blew a tire and collided with a Greyhound bus on an Indiana highway yesterday. Beth Smith, wife of PGA Tour player Chris Smith and the driver of the SUV, was killed in the accident. Their children, Abigail and Cameron, were transported to a Fort Wayne hospital where they are listed in critical condition. Several members of a Canadian semipro football team who were riding on the bus were also injured in the crash. Click here to view a video report from the scene.
Readers were also interested in this AP story about a controversial employment application. The city of Bozeman, Mont., has been asking job applicants to share their Internet screennames, URLs and passwords for verification purposes. The city says it wants to check the online activities of applicants because some of the jobs are positions of public trust. Local lawmakers, the ACLU and hundreds of citizens have blasted the request as an invasion of privacy.
Looking ahead: President Barack Obama is scheduled to sign an anti-smoking bill into law that will give the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco. The president also plans to announce an agreement by the pharmaceutical industry to help close a gap in prescription drug coverage under Medicare. A former medical student accused of killing a woman he met through Craigslist will be arraigned in Boston today on first-degree murder and other charges. And a blogger is due in a Connecticut courtroom to face a charge of inciting violence against state lawmakers.
