Man detained by Sacramento police died after apparent medical emergency, authorities say

A man died after suffering an apparent medical emergency while being detained by Sacramento police officers Tuesday morning in the city’s Woodbine neighborhood, authorities said.

The incident began with multiple 911 calls beginning around 4:30 a.m. reporting a prowler in the area of 51st Avenue, the Sacramento Police Department said in a news release. One of the callers reported hearing an unknown person enter their backyard, police said.

Officers arrived at the scene, located a man and began to detain him, according to the news release.

The man suffered an apparent medical emergency while officers were detaining him, the department said. Officers at the scene rendered medical aid, including CPR, until Sacramento Fire Department personnel arrived.

Fire personnel transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead later Tuesday, police said.

Police said officers did not use force and did not handcuff him “at any point during the encounter,” according to the department news release.

The department said it was possible the man may have been involved in a vehicle collision prior to officers’ arrival.

Detectives responded to the scene to investigate the death, police in a social media post just after 1 p.m. The man’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The Police Department’s homicide, internal affairs and professional standards units are investigating the in-custody death. The investigation remains in early stages, according to a Tuesday evening news release.

Under Sacramento City Council policy, video and audio associated with the incident will be publicly released within 30 days.
