    Saint Leo Conference Expands Global Learning for Students in On-Campus and Online MBA Programs

    Saint Leo University hosts 2012 International Business Conference to connect academic and business experts

    Saint Leo University, one of the leading Catholic universities in Florida, hosted the third annual International Business Conference last week at its Tampa-area campus. The conference, held February 9-10, drew a diverse crowd of attendees, ranging from Saint Leo students and faculty to local business practitioners and international experts. With a focus on the globalization of business, the conference introduced business students—including those enrolled in the online MBA programs and online degree in business administration—to both the opportunities and challenges of doing business in the 21st century.

    “The International Business Conference helps accomplish Saint Leo’s mission of becoming a leading Catholic teaching university of international consequence,” said Dr. Eric Schwarz, associate professor and conference director. “It is one way that we can facilitate knowledge sharing between the academic and business communities, and encourage students to become more globally aware.”

    One of the biggest themes resonating throughout the two-day conference was the role of strategic alliances in a global economy. Breakout sessions addressed best practices for building strategic alliances; recruiting and managing multi-cultural workforces; cyberspace security; and global entrepreneurship.

    Keynote presentations connected globalism and business, from the local and international perspective. Thomas Stewart, Chief Marketing and Knowledge Officer for Booz and Company, shared insights on how to build capabilities to become a truly global company. And Dr. Josefa Ramoni Perazzi, Professor of Economics at the University of the Andes in Venezuela, discussed the influence of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) on US-Mexico economies.

    Students played an active role in the 2012 conference. On Thursday afternoon, students shared international business e-poster presentations using 70-inch interactive displays from SMART Technologies in the new $12 million School of Business building, completed in 2011. Conference participants had an opportunity to tour the School of Business building, which boasts the latest technologies in education and sustainability.

    Saint Leo University’s main campus, education centers and online programs—such as the online MBA programs—allow the university to reach a diverse student population worldwide. Saint Leo University has students and alumni in more than 50 countries, and students have completed internships in England, Germany, the Caribbean and Australia.
