Samantha Bee, Jason Jones Talk New TBS Series ‘Full Frontal’ and ‘The Detour’

Samantha Bee was visiting a pumpkin patch on Long Island with her husband and three children last month when she first saw the recent Vanity Fair photo spread on late-night hosts — a group of 10 men, including Trevor Noah who had yet to premiere as “Daily Show” host.

“I got so angry. I was just like f— you,” she told the crowd Friday at New York Comic Con. She immediately doctored the photo to superimpose her face on a manly torso attached to a horse over the group. From the side of a stand selling apple cider, she tweeted out the picture with the the word “BETTER,” sparking a round of conversation about the dearth of women in late-night.

“I think people are feeling exhausted by it,” she said. “Can’t we just have a f—— woman’s face in that lineup. Just one time – please?”

Bee and husband Jason Jones spoke about their upcoming projects for TBS during a panel session moderated by fellow “Daily Show” alum Mo Rocca. Bee is hosting a weekly late-night half-hour, “Full Frontal,” that will be a mix of topical humor and field pieces that she and Jones were known for during their tenure’s on the Comedy Central series.

Jones is an exec producer of “Full Frontal” and will probably make an appearance or two on the show, he said, “if she wants help from a white male.”

“Full Frontal” is set to debut in January. She says the waiting period is hard, as she feels great material from the headlines is passing her by. “But I think America will still be crazy by January, so I think we’ll be OK,” she said.

Jones talked up his new edgy family comedy “The Detour,” which they wrote and he stars in. Bee is also an exec producer. He described the project as a family-finding-itself story with twists. “It’s a lot of tropes you’ve heard before, but we do them in a new and funny way,” he said. As an example: In one episode, the couple’s 11-year-old daughter gets her period while visiting a strip club. “That’s not going to show up on ABC Family,” he joked.
