    The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), The Syrian British Medical Society (SBMS), and the Syrian Expatriates organization (SEO) appeal to the International community to demand that the Syrian authorities allow safe transport and adequate treatment of the wounded in the city of Homs.

    The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), The Syrian British Medical Society (SBMS), and the Syrian Expatriates organization (SEO) appeal to the International community to demand that the Syrian authorities allow safe transport and adequate treatment of the wounded in the city of Homs.

    The humanitarian situation in Homs is appalling due to continued shelling by the Assad regime forces effectively cutting the city off from the world, as reported by Neil MacFarquhar, New York Times News Service (http://www.bendbulletin.com/article/20120210/NEWS0107/202100417).

    There is no electricity and food is scarce. Hundreds of wounded civilians are prevented from being transported to hospitals for treatment. In a city of more than a million inhabitants only one small hospital, Albir hospital, is able to treat patients and it is under the restraint of rapidly depleting medical supplies (http://tgr.ph/w1mKTn).

    The physicians in Homs describe lack of resources and inability to treat the wounded due to frequent reprisals by the regime security forces. There is fear the the wounded who survive may suffer long term disabilities. "Paris-based Doctors Without Borders has said that the regime is targeting doctors helping the wounded. A field hospital in Homs has been repeatedly shelled."

    Doctors Without Borders, said in a statement that the Assad regime was denying urgent medical attention and using medicine “as a weapon of persecution.”


    Residents of Homs have also warned of scarce food and medical supplies. Hivin Kako, spokesperson with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told FSRN that the shelling continues. “The city and the area, these neighborhoods have been under bombardment are under a complete siege and they cannot get anything from outside and almost everything they had already is running out. The humanitarian situation is quite miserable.” Hivin Kako, spokesperson with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, speaking from England.

    The international community and human rights organizations should act to ensure protection of the helpless citizens of Homs, safe evacuation of the wounded and adequate treatment of the injured. The medical professionals treating the wounded should be protected from reprisals by the regime's security forces.
