    Samsung eyes Android rival to power upcoming Galaxy smartphone

    Samsung (005930) has been making moves to separate itself from the Android pack, and the South Korea-based company is about to take things a giant leap further according to a new report. Citing unnamed industry sources, Digitimes on Tuesday states that Samsung is preparing to launch its first Galaxy smartphone powered by the Tizen operating system, an open-source Linux-based Android competitor backed by a number of companies including Samsung, which added its own Bada OS to the Tizen project earlier this year. While Samsung may attract vendor interest to Tizen if its debut effort is a success, the report notes that Samsung’s new smartphone will “face challenges” when it launches, the most obvious of which being the fact that consumers have no idea what Tizen is. Digitimes’ sources did not indicate when the new Tizen-based Galaxy phone might launch.
