Samsung’s virtual reality plans are finally taking shape

As the wearable market continues to heat up, tech companies around the world are looking to expand into every relevant category of the fledgling industry. We’ve seen smartwatches, smart glasses and even smart shoes, but the sector of the wearable field that has us most excited is virtual reality. Sony and Oculus have taken most of the spotlight up until now, but Samsung is preparing an entry of its own to reveal at IFA 2014. Now, just two weeks from the event, new photos of the Gear VR have leaked.

The photos on Naver show off a headset with a markedly different look than the “Project Moonlight” leak from earlier this month, but the leaker notes that these are the actual production units of the Gear VR. In other words, this might be what we see on stage next month when Samsung finally unveils the device.

The model number of the headset is listed as SM-R320, but there aren’t many other additional details. The leaker seems to believe that the Gear VR will launch in September and backs up the claim that it will connect with the Galaxy S5. The device is also expected to feature an OLED display and is supposedly being worked on in tandem with Oculus VR.
