Sangakkara century helps Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh

MIRPUR, Bangladesh (AP) — MIRPUR, Bangladesh (AP) — Kumar Sangakkara's 17th international century led Sri Lanka to a straightforward 61-runs win over Bangladesh in the second one-day International at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 228 in reply of Sri Lanka's 289-6, giving Sri Lanka an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sangakkara smashed 128 off 115 balls, including 14 fours, after Sri Lanka elected to bat first. Partnering with Ashan Priyanjan, who scored 60, they put down 114 for the fourth wicket, steering the side's recovery from a precarious 63-3.

Sangakkara was in complete control and apparently flawless. The Bangladeshi bowlers helped him, though, by regularly bowling too short. Priyanjan was sluggish at the outset and survived twice in the first balls before improving.

Earlier, captain Angelo Mathews got the innings off at a quick pace, hitting 56 off 39 balls with six fours and one six. It was his 17th half-century in ODI cricket.

The Bangladeshi fielders missed a number of catches that helped Sri Lanka to make their innings healthy one. Rubel Hossain was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-76, while Arafat Sunny, Shakib Al Hasan and Sohag Gazi took one wicket apiece.

In the Bangladesh innings, captain Mushfiqur Rahim scored highest, taking 79 off 83 balls with five fours and two sixes, while opener Anamul Haque contributed 42. Shakib Al Hasan was the other notable scorer with 24.

Only Rahim's holdout delayed the victory of the visitors as the Sri Lankan bowlers struck regularly to hinder Bangladesh's progress.

Lasith Malinga had taken Shamsur Rahman, the highest scorer of the first match, for a duck, while Sachitra Senanayeke removed Mominul Haque to make early inroads.

Senanayeke, Thisara Perera, Ajantha Mendis and Malinga ended with two wickets apiece.
