Santorum Booed in New Hampshire While Discussing Gay Marriage

Santorum Booed in New Hampshire While Discussing Gay Marriage

A crowd of mostly college-aged students at a New Hampshire town hall booed Rick Santorum when he compared gay marriage to polygamy. Santorum spoke at the College Convention 2012, a forum organized by New England College, which apparently drew a politically diverse crowd. BuzzFeed's Rosie Gray* transcribes the exchange between the student and Santorum:

"How you justify your belief based on these morals you have about all men being created equal when two men who want to marry the person that they love --"

Santorum cut her off and said "What about three men ... If you think it's ok for two, you have to differentiate with me why it's not OK for three."

The New York Times reports that people booed specifically when Santorum said "If you’re not happy unless you’re married to five other people, is that O.K.?” And some in the crowd booed again at the conclusion of the session. This is of course not the first time Santorum has caused conflict with his slippery slope-ish arguments. It also reminds us of Mitt Romney's very tense Q&A with the audience at a New Hampshire event Wednesday, where an Occupy Boston representative and a Chinese-American woman both asked Romney semi-hostile questions. With the Iowa caucuses over, it's "No More Mr. Nice Midwestern Crowd." More like "Live Free or Die" we suppose.

Said it before and I'll say it again: Beware of people like this guy. The ones that will crow about everybody in America being a free American and turn right around and decline a certain group of people rights or strip them of their rights. You're not free and never were free as long as you have somebody on a higher ladder rung than you are dictating towards the people on lower ladder rungs or even ordering certain groups off the ladder. I say equality for everybody. Everybody should have equal rights.Throw the ladder away!

Gays have never had any right to "marry" people of the same sex. It's folly.
      • ConcernedInvestor 4 mths ago
If God were to appear to you right now and tell you that gay marriage, polygamy, adultery, pedophilia, and bestiality were all wrong, would you believe Him? Obey Him? Oh wait, He already did that, and most of these are commonplace in our country. What can you say when He judges us?
      • Strangelove 4 mths ago
I'll play. God could appear in front of me and I'd still think the way I do. It's all about people not hurting each other or anything else imo. Gay marriage involves consenting adults. How are they hurting each other or anybody else? Polygamy--I personally wouldn't want to do it but I guess it falls once again to consenting adults. If consenting adults want to do that--that's their perogative. Adultery--Yeah, I think it's bad. People do get hurt emotionally. Pedophilia and beastality--totally wrong. You're no longer dealing with consent in those cases. It's wrong imo.

If you don't believe in marrying a gay person, don't marry a gay person. Pretty simple.

Break them at your own risk. You aren't physically being stopped.
      • David 4 mths ago
@Buckley's: So be it, none of my business, run all the red lights you want and drink and drive until you're dead, not my concern. Get it?..

Ho-hum, nice going Rick Santorum, oh I'm impressed you sure showed those kids, then again I would ask another morale question, a common factor seen amongst hetero, "Love Triangles" A Married Man, and Wife, and Mistress ( Affair ). Explain that to me.
      • Shades of Gray 4 mths ago
Too complicated for him, you would blow his tiny little mind. He would also alienate: 1) the heavy duty bible crowd, and 2) everybody who has cheated - and subtract both of those groups - who is left to vote for him? Oh, yeah - that would leave the gays (not all gays cheat - real easy to just break up) and the polygamists. Isn't it ironic?

Is that the same slippery slope that was going to turn Japan, New Zealand, and Australia communist if we didn't destroy Vietnam?

Santorum's comparison of gay marriage to polygamy makes no sense. What does a married couple, gay or straight, got to do with polygamy (or any of the other practices he links it to like bestiality and incest)? This man is scary with the nonsensical comparisons he makes on this and other topics, yet, he is currently a leading Republican presidential candidate. Amazing.

It seems as if ever since the Republicans gave their first "character", Palin, the spotlight, off-the-wall characters like Santorum, Cain, Bachmann, and Gingrich, etc. have come out of the woodwork. Even Paul, who makes some valid points, is too extreme. His approach to solving issues is to throw the baby out with the bath water. Neither the Republican or Democratic parties would support his positions. There are only two reasonably viable Republican candidates, Huntsman and Romney, and Romney has been looking less viable as of late as he plays for support from the extremists in the party.

The problem began when the far rightwing of the Republican Party got the driver's reins. Part of it came through campaign financing, resulting in the Norquist pledge or no money. Since then they've moved so far to the right they'd throw Eisenhower out.
      • L 4 mths ago
        Freddie,
I think you are right when you say that the Republicans today would throw out Eisenhower.
    • StarGazer  •  4 mths ago
Nathan other than the obvious fact that heterosexual couples have a choice of anal or vaginal intercourse and homosexual males obviously cannot indulge in vaginal intercourse what other differences are you referring to? A civil marriage is a legal contract between 2 people which convey certain rights, privleges and responsibilities. None of those rights, privleges or responsibilities are gender specific, as heterosexual couples both enjoy them.

So a specific example would help clarify your argument.

I'm totally against gay marriage but honestly its really none of the government's business and has no place in politics and neither does abortion those matters should be up to individuals between them and their conscience or between them and their God if they so believe ..the government does not belong in a woman's womb or in anyone bedroom unless it is causing harm to another human being
    • DeepAztheRoot  •  4 mths ago
Stupid religious theocrat Republicans always complaining about the leftist liberal government taking away freedoms need to look in the mirror, it's no different when Evangelical fools do the same thing based on religious dogma.
    • Alex  •  4 mths ago
There are many places that have allowed same-sex marriage for years, and there has been no slipper slope at all. Does Santorum know this, or does he live in his own little fictional world where everyone hates gay people equally?
    • Alexander V  •  4 mths ago
If gay marriage threatens your "traditional" marriage in any way, your marriage was worthless to begin with. We do NOT want a Biblical rule, we do NOT want a Sharia rule- keep your religions OFF my science, my body, and my politics ! ! ! !
    • Gladiator  •  4 mths ago
If your only criteria for picking a president is gay marriage then don't vote for him.
    • Brown  •  4 mths ago
He is a stupid loser as best. Boo the hateful discriminator out of the race. The wrath of God abides with Santorum.
    • Don M.  •  St Louis, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
this is what happens when you are ignorant enough to believe that everyone else shares your bigoted worldview.

Santorum will go down (pun intended) when more and more people see what type of blatant bigotry this man espouses.
    • Drill Baby Drill  •  4 mths ago
I think that if Rick wants to put his head up his rectum, that it should be allowed under the law. It doesn't hurt anybody but him.
    • Robert T  •  4 mths ago
Once again the republicans are trying to use gay people to win political power. For not liking gay people, they sure do talk a lot about them...
    • Slash Firestorm  •  4 mths ago
How many of the countries and states that have legalized gay marriage have also legalized pedophilia or bestiality?

      Oh right, zero.

      Their skies haven't fallen, either.
    • Strangelove  •  4 mths ago
Okay, here's the deal---you're old enough to know you're in love. Doesn't matter if you're with a man or a woman. Why should anybody that you don't even know try and squeeze themselves in the middle and order you around? Man, just seems like people in the govt think we're all 4 year olds. Sit down, get out of everybody else's business and shut the **** up.
    • Grand Imam O'Reilly  •  4 mths ago
If you are opposed to gay marriage, Mitt is your man!
If you approve of gay marriage, Mitt is your man!
      Whatever it takes.
