Santorum rips Ron Paul for Romney alliance, denies Specter’s claim of no deal

On Friday’s broadcast of Laura Ingraham’s radio show, Rick Santorum defended his claim that his endorsement of moderate Sen. Arlen Specter in 2004 stemmed from a conversation the two had about supporting President Bush’s Supreme Court nominees.

Specter had appeared on MSNBC earlier in the day and denied that he and Santorum had discussed Bush’s nominees prior to the 2004 election.

“We never had any such conversation,” Specter told the network’s Chuck Todd. “It would be improper to make a commitment on a vote before I knew who the nominee was and whether I thought the nominee was qualified. I’ve got a very strong reputation and a record behind that did not make deals like that.”

Santorum, however, told Ingraham that wasn’t the case and cited the confirmations of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito as proof.

“I would just say in response to that: Roberts and Alito,” Santorum said. “You look at Arlen Specter and what he did to fight and fight and claw, particularly for Alito at everything that was brought up. He knocked it down. He carried the water and carried I might add brilliantly and stood up and did exactly what he said he would do as chairman of the committee as long as he was consulted, stand up and fight for the president’s nominees.”

Santorum said that the conversation took place toward the end of Specter’s race in 2004 against conservative challenger Pat Toomey, who won election to the Senate in 2010.

“We actually had that conversation at the end of his campaign, when he asked me to go out and do an ad to help him,” Santorum said. “’Arlen,’ I said. ‘I need assurances that you know, if you win this election, you’re going to stand up and fight as chairman of the committee. That is  an absolute, you know — to me the thing I have to have assurances on before I get out and say anything publicly on television or radio about you.’ And he said, ‘As long as I’m consulted as chairman of the Judiciary Committee. That’s my responsibility as chairman of the committee to do that.’ That’s what he said.

“The proof is in the pudding, Laura.”

Later in that appearance, Santorum addressed the allegations that two of his rivals for the GOP nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul have formed an alliance.

“You explain to me why Ron Paul is running ads in Michigan,” he said. “He hasn’t even appeared at a campaign event in Michigan. And he is running ads in Michigan and he is attacking me. I mean, you figure that one out for me and you probably are a better political expert than I am. He hasn’t attacked him once in a debate. Look, I’ll take on all comers and I’ll take them on in pairs if necessary.”

Paul, it should be noted, will be making campaign stops in Michigan on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the lead up to the state’s primary on Tuesday.

      2 Quick Facts:

      1. If Paul betrays his principles and teams with Romney - WE WILL NOT betray our values and vote for the lesser of 2 evils - we are sick of being given 2 choice - both bad!

      2. Paul will NOT betray 30 years of public service for a meaningless 2nd-place VP position

Do not fall for this diversion - it is more of the same, the media invents diversions, mind-control misinformation, propaganda manipulating stories and non-stories in an attempt to stop the FREEDOM TRAIN!

Let's get back to the truth - Dr. Paul is WINNING - he is being cheated by the GOP Fraud machine - We MUST KEEP going, not get distracted and win the hearts of all THINKING Americans to do the right thing - NEVER sell out, NEVER vote for the lesser of 2 evils!

      Dr. Ron Paul 2012!!!!

More with this conspiracy theory? Rick Santorum called Ron Paul "Disgusting" a few weeks ago. Newt has suggested Paul drop out of the race and said that he wouldn't vote for him if he got the GOP nomination. This is about respect as well and neither Rick nor Newt have shown Ron Paul any respect as a candidate.

What I see is Santorum trying to divert the attention from his pathetic showing in the last debate because instead of talking about him folding under the pressure of being the front runner, people are now talking about this STUPID conspiracy theory of his.

The Ron Paul camp should be very excited about that label "Ron Paul: The candidate Newt will not vote for" I love it

Let me get this straight. Santorum calls Ron Paul "disgusting" just a few weeks ago and now he's surprised that there's an attack ad out there against him??? What a hypocrite! Sounds like poor Ricky is just trying to divert the attention from having such a poor debate because he couldn't handle the pressure of being the front runner. Simple as that.

OOOOhhhhh, Dr. Paul is picking on me! What a cry baby.
    • j  •  3 mths ago
I't would not benifit Paul to mingle with Romney, Paul supporters are strongly against Romney, him doing anything with Romney will make him lose everything he has been doing for 30 years. I am quite sure this is all media lies, most likely to try and get santorum to stay in the race. I myself arent about party lines, and basicly santorum would have no chance with Obama. Paul is by far the repulicans best chance, and they refuse to get behind him, just shows they would rather have another Obama term, then really change anything in our system, a bunch of scumbags. Ohh well, one day it will all catch up, and these people behind it all will be the ones running for their lives, hiding like ghiddafi.

Republicans if you seriously nominate Rick Santorum for the predidency, you are ignorant, narrow-minded, and just plain stupid.
    • A Concerned Person  •  3 mths ago
There is a vedio that Rand Paul was interviewed on this Ron and Romney vp thing and he said there is no truth to the matter at all period. Why shouldnt Ron Paul go after Rick Santorum he is running against him. What the heck does the cry baby think this is. Is he going to cry and throw a tantrum every time someone does not agree with him? Santorum is really showing his true colors now. I hope the people can see through him. Ron Paul 2012
    • John Madden  •  3 mths ago
Romney will be very easy to discredit. Uncle Ron is the smartest guy on stage by far. He knows what he is doing and he is not teaming up with the stormin morman. He will not sell out to his principles because if he did, his supporters really would have no hope. We just have to continue to carry the message and not worry about the storyline the presstitutes are trying to shovel. Everytime Ron Paul speaks a sheep wakes up from his slumber and sees the light!

Uncle Ron or No one 2012 !!
    • A Concerned Person  •  3 mths ago
Ron Paul is not going to play second fiddle to Romney. What the heck does Rick think. He must think that Ron is not to show anything about little Ricky. Rand Paul has made it clear that Ron is not going after the VP spot. He said Ron is in it to win.
    • Marsha  •  3 mths ago
I find it laughable that Santorum is trying to defend his positions. His paranoid accusations and ranting about satan has knocked him out of the race, not any imaginary alliance he thinks Ron Paul has formed. Accept the fact that you are no longer a viable candidate and bow out gracefully! Ron Paul 2012
    • Micah  •  3 mths ago
Rick Santorum is a nutter bent on creating a theocratic state. Romney and Dr. Paul are on friendly terms outside of politics but Dr. Paul does not ignore their political differences. If Santorum was speaking the truth, wouldn't it make more sense for Dr. Paul to drop out and endorse Romney, perhaps in exchange for the VP slot? Dr. Paul is interested in neither. That is why he's still running. Peace, prosperity and liberty. RON PAUL 2012!
    • sukiyhtaky  •  Monterey, California  •  3 mths ago
Ron Paul in an alliance? You can agree or not agree with Ron Paul's politics, but you cannot say he is in an alliance with anyone. He has a voice, he is not afraid to make it heard even when it is unpopular and I think it is safe to say he would not ally with anyone he is running against.
    • Obomney  •  Richardson, Texas  •  3 mths ago
We can safely add "paranoia" to Santorum's long list of psychological disorders. Romney probably does need Paul as VP to win, but Paul doesn't need Romney. Paul is still in it to win.
