Santorum shrugs off report of Iowa vote errors

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum shrugged off reports late Thursday that the vote count from Iowa's caucuses might be wrong, saying the errors appear not to change the fact that he and Mitt Romney were nearly tied.

Santorum told Fox News that Iowa's Republican Party chairman, Matt Strawn, informed him of two cases in which errors were reported in the count from Tuesday night. Taken together, Santorum said, the changes would almost cancel out each other and that Romney would win by nine votes instead of eight.

"That doesn't really matter to me," he said. "This was a tie."

Strawn said in a statement that party officials would not respond to "every rumor, innuendo or allegation" as it certifies results during a two-week certification process. Romney and Santorum each had just over 30,000 votes out of more than 122,000 votes cast.

Strawn said state party officials had been in contact with GOP officials in Appanoose County but that officials "do not have any reason to believe the final, certified results of Appanoose County will change the outcome of Tuesday's vote."

Des Moines TV station KCCI reported that a Ron Paul backer attending his first precinct caucuses in Appanoose County, in southern Iowa, said the vote from his precinct was inaccurately reported and gave Romney 20 more votes than he actually received.

The Paul supporter, Edward True of Moulton, told The Associated Press that he helped count the ballots cast at his precinct caucuses and that Romney received two votes. True said he was shocked to see the official results on the Republican Party website showed Romney with 22 votes in the precinct.

"I assume somebody made a typographical error," he said in a telephone interview.

True said that when he contacted local Republican officials, "They said they would sort it out in the next couple of weeks, but how many primaries will have happened by that time?"

Won't be the last. Why do the Republicans even take votes? Seems like a waste of time and money. They've got it all decided anyway.

Wow...the truth is coming out.......votes given to the wrong person. I thought it was weird that Santorum.....came in so close to Romney and more then Ron Paul. Santorum was there 2 weeks..no money and no ads.

Yeah, Rick Perry stuck his foot in his mouth and we get this t**d shoved down our throats at the last minute. Where was Perry during the Straw Vote?

Fox favorites can't do well on the bogus issues they raise so when voters get tired of the pretty face of the week they put up a new one.

Neither of the two main U.S. political "parties", the Repos and the Demos, are united on principle, they're both rotten blocks comprising several different and mutually-exclusive ideological trends that stay together for the sole reason of opposing the other rotten block. The only choice for the public is, which one is the "lesser evil".

My hope: The Repos continue to splinter and fall apart; this leads the Demos (who have nothing to offer their working-class "base" but "we're not the Repos") to likewise fall apart; and the shakeup leads to a system of proportional representation in Congress and state legislatures, allowing for principled parties to compete on the basis of their consistently-stated political vision, not "lesser-evilism".

Then big business could have their own party (like what Bloomberg et al. are setting up now), the libertarians and the religious right could go their separate ways, and the working class could finally have a party of our own.

The final winner among those the D/R Parties allow to run is already picked and your vote is counted or not in many cases depending on if you agree to their choice (another reason the establishment is strongly opposed to a viable 3rd Party and to Ron Paul). To believe otherwise is to be blinded to a political truth and a refusal to see real-world politics as it has long been.
Other words THINK about a choice between the D/R blissful ignorance of illusion (blue) and embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality (red) pill, so to speak.!

In fact this really does not matter except to the media. In Iowa delegates to the county convention are not bound by anything that happens in their caucus. I'm sure generally they follow the wishes of the majority in their precinct but they aren't bound and in a close race like this who knows what the majority actually want.
      • LibertyBelle 4 mths ago
Exactly right... and as Santorum, Gingrich, Bachmann exit the race those delegates will find a new candidate to support.

There were only about 100,000 votes in the caucus where anyone from any party can participate, out of state population of I think about 3 million. It is just an indication of how the most interested people feel.

Votes were stolen from Paul and given to Santorum. Of course he should shrug it off.
    • LibertyBelle  •  4 mths ago
I bet he shrugged it off... he gained 16% overnight

If this election is between Repubs and Dems, and the Repubs lost by 8 votes, He won't care if there is no recounts in Iowa for a million years. He will demand a recount and even start crying thinking about his deceased mother.

another example of our corrupt political system....when they will not even respond to credible first hand eyewitness reports of vote tampering.....at least these votes can be counted....the computerized ones we use in the general election leave no paper trail and are easily rigged.
