SIOUX CITY, IowaRick Santorum added a twist to the Republican argument that President Obama wants to make people more dependent on the federal government. He singled out blacks as people whose lives he would improve without using "somebody else's money."

The comment came Sunday in response to a man’s question about foreign influence on the U.S. economy. "How do we get off this crazy train? We've got so much foreign influence in this country now," the man said. "Where do we go from here?"

In a lengthy answer, Santorum talked about reviving U.S. manufacturing and then pivoted to the government-dependency theme.

"What President Obama wants to do, his economic plan is to make more people dependent upon government. To grow the government, to make sure we have more food stamps, and more SSI, and more Medicaid. Four in 10 children are now on government-provided health care. It just keeps expanding," Santorum said.

He talked about how Iowa is going to get fined if more people don’t sign up for Medicaid and then said, "They're pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That's what the bottom line is. So I don't want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families."

are Blacks the ONLY ones on welfare?
    • PsychoSpice™  •  4 mths ago
"No, sir. The only people who should be allowed to live off other people's money, while doing nothing to serve the people, is us... the politicians."

        love it!
      • reality 4 mths ago
But Santorum has not been in politics since 2008. Obama had appointed him as foreign ambassador back in 2009.
      • Diamond State Son 4 mths ago
One term in the U.S. Senate = 6 years. Eligibility for a retirement from Congress = 5 years. Rick Santorum was in the Congress (as a U.S. Representative and a U.S. Senator) from 1991 until 2007, and the deficit and national debt went up under his watch. Once again, who is living off the government for doing nothing?

My husband is disabled from a job related accident and let me tell you it has not been an easy process getting his social security disablity started.....and might i add he worked and paid taxes for 40 years so i do not consider this a free handout.....he would still be working if it were possible......By the way we are white

So are most of the hateful idiots posting on here, who are seemingly under the impression that nothing bad will ever happen to them. (by the way, I don't believe most white people are bigots, just the ones who support P Oh Esses like Santorum.

Sassy, you're husband is a legitimate case then. The ones sucking us dry are those who have no intentions of trying to better themselves though they are able-bodied. Totally different situation. There are many out there who would love to work, but aren't able to obtain work. I know how that goes. My husband has been in that situation before. Got layed off, then told by employers that he had TOO much education for the jobs he applied for. We needed some help then while he ended up working low paying jobs. But no big deal because we've more than 100 times paid for what was ever received. (Not's not even touch the SS/medicare portions that we'll most likely never see. We're younger grandparents.) Difference is, we

Harvey's correct. It is very hard to geta job if you are black, especially in this lousy republican economy.

have you ever noticed how every story has a little nugget thrown in there to make us all turn on each other? Only the good politicians have all the answers and can take care of us. Wake up people, and stop the "in fighting." We get nowhere with hating each other.

        Best post of the day.
      • J 4 mths ago
Well said Disgusted. I too laugh at all these morons on here fighting while they totally lose the bigger picture. If this country fails, we all fail no matter what color we are. But that's a concept lost upon so many people.

While I agree, I have been a victim of racism and that has NOT changed.
    • Stockman  •  Mattoon, Illinois  •  4 mths ago
I agree. We need to wean Republican states like Kentucky, Mississippi, Alaska, the Dakotas, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Louisiana off federal aid.
All of these states get more federal aid than they pay in taxes.
Alaska, for example, gets $1.67 in federal aid for every dollar they pay in taxes. In contrast, California, the eighth largest economy in the world, gets .80 in federal aid for every dollar it pays in taxes. No state should get more federal aid than it pays in taxes.
      • david f 4 mths ago
While I agree with you quite a bit, I think that some of the states that get more federal aid than they pay actually deserve it. Case in point, I live in NM, yes it is a state, And what we get in federal aid, we too are one of the states that gets more than it gives, is far less than what we have given this country in return. (I know that was a huge run-on sorry) Our land has been used and abused by the dept of defense. I mean what other state has had a nuclear bomb blasted on it? I'm sure that is why we have high juvenile cancer rates, and I'm sure that radioactivity isn't going away in our life time. By the way we store a hell of a lot of nuclear waste too. So it may not be the typical sucking the government tit, in all cases. How ever Alaska getting that much is a bit much.

Stockman you omit the fact that if we didn't take their money in the first place we wouldn't have to worry about who "gets more".
    • meat.org  •  4 mths ago
Where is my share of the handout that is given to all of the corporations, big business, oil and banks that they receive on a daily basis. I think ALL of us should start demanding our share. After all, we are the one's paying fot it all !!! Of course, this is in part why our government is so corrupt with business and politicians lining each other's pockets. Our representatives in Washington no longer represent us.
      • Marc 4 mths ago
Thats exactly what people like Ron Paul or Rick Santorum want to stop. Keep putting the puppets in Washington and you keep getting the same ole' stuff. Sorry some of you don't like the way he comes across, but for the most part, they got it right.
      • Ryan 4 mths ago
Where do you think people get the money they pay taxes for? Business of all sizes. Who removes and refines the oil so we may drive cars, fly airplanes, have electricity, and live our modern lives? Corporations.

What you and many Americans do not seem to be able to understand is that it is big business who generates the money that pays our salaries and the taxes that fund the government. Without business of all sizes we would not have a government. Government does not generate money on its own. It is entirely dependent on taxation of some sort for its funding.

i want a brand new car, those companies should be giving us cars for bailing them out.

Why did he have to put "black" into it? Stupid!
    • Michelle Lampson  •  Duluth, Minnesota  •  4 mths ago
Personally, I'd like to know how the government is getting more people on SSI since you can't even qualify for it unless you are completely disabled and unable to work. You also have to meet rather stringent asset and income requirements. I haven't seen anything from the government that loosens either the medical or financial requirements. The only improvements have been the ability to submit the application on-line rather than having to travel to a Social Security office to get the paperwork, and the ability to have your money directly deposited in your bank account instead of getting a paper check.

Is this the same Rick Santorum who used government funds to pay for cyber school for his children?
    • LeoS  •  4 mths ago
Santorum also just made sure that every single black American will vote for anyone else but him.

    • beezy  •  4 mths ago
See conservatives, THIS is why I roll my eyes when your politicians swear that they don’t see color, only Americans. Which is it? I'd be more inclined to listen to your argument if you stuck to one argument. Or even better if you stopped trying to divide poor whites, blacks, and browns who are all going through the same thing.

-Sincerely, A melanin enhanced human who's never been on welfare.
    • Candide  •  4 mths ago
Isn't it ironic that people involved in stock-market activities are the ones that are truly dependent on the government? What would have happenned to Wall Street if not for bailouts, QE's, fed actions and money printing? Yet these same people are the ones blathering about how important they are as movers and shakers. Santorum's "entepereneurs" are primarily welfare babies straight off the stock market, pure and simple.
    • Charleston  •  Charleston, South Carolina  •  4 mths ago
I guess farm subsidies don't make farmers dependent on the government. Try and drop them and listen to the howl. Oil companies must be dependent on the government because they yell and holler at a hint of cuttin gthem. But according to Santorum only blacks are government deprendent. I guess they must own all the farms and oil companies.

I lived in Beaver County, Pa. and all around all of those yowns that once had a very thriving mining and steel mill industry there is nothing but severe poverty. All of those counties in the sw Pennsylvania area have been hurt for decdes by job lose and poverty. There is so much poverty in his own backyard and the counties are 90 to 95% white, the people are suffering and have been suffering for years. You can drive around Pa. and the neighboring WV and Ohio area and see the decline. Suffering has no color. Santorum is pandering to a certain section of the Republican party and using the same code words as in the past to people who are fightiong century old battles.

Ricky forgets all the entitlements he received as a senator...he sure does the talk, but where's the walk?!!?
    • Annie-g  •  Raleigh, North Carolina  •  4 mths ago
How come Santorum has no problem with corporations and their corporate welfare or Wall Street taking a hand out from the taxpayers? It is only black people he has issues with. I gather he is not aware that white people are also on welfare. What hypocrites.

Taxes on the wealthy have been cut for over 10 years so the "job creators" can create jobs. Well, WHERE ARE THE JOBS?
    • Dodge  •  4 mths ago
Give Rick credit-- he's certainly learned how to appeal to his base.
    • L  •  4 mths ago
Santorum said, "So I don't want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families." What he did not say was how he intended to do that. Hey, I want everyone off of welfare by providing them meaningful jobs and ways for their children to be tended to when they work; I want peace throughout the world; I want full employment; I want lower prices so things are more affordable for people; vote for me.
