Santorum's Hypocrisy Highlighted by Daughter's Illness

COMMENTARY | Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum suspended his bid for the GOP nod to run against Barack Obama when his daughter, Bella Santorum, was hospitalized, according to the Associated Press. Bella suffers from Trisomy 18, a rare genetic disorder in which a baby has some or all of an extra chromosome. While it is always tragic for a parent to face losing a child, the situation highlights a political issue: Santorum's hypocrisy on health care, abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

Santorum's campaign website discusses his views on these matters. He is emphatically against a woman's right to control her own body in reproductive matters and is adamantly opposed to embryonic stem cell research. He is against a single-payer national health care system provided to all citizens. He opposes the first two on religious grounds on the third for reasons of political dogma.

As to abortion, Santorum flip-flops on his opposition, according to a Care2.com report. It's easy for him to rail against abortion when such ranting might win him votes.

It's also easier for him to oppose it because he has the best health care in America available to him and his family -- provided at taxpayer expense, no less. He never had to consider whether care for a terminally ill child would destroy his family financially.

Unless the U.S. enacts a national health care plan most families will never be able to afford the care needed for a child with Trisomy 18. Santorum's family will never lack for health care or face crippling medical debt -- but as far as he's concerned it's fine for your family to have those problems.

Santorum's opposition to embryonic stem cell research is ludicrous for two reasons. First, such research involves the collection of cells from a blastocyst, a blob of about 150 cells so small the human eye cannot detect it, according to the National Institute for Health. Second, such research could save the lives of his daughter and countless others suffering from her condition. It's despicable for him to fight against the best possible hope for a cure to the very condition killing his child.

It makes me wonder how Santorum's opinion might change if he was an average American with a household income of less than $50,000 per year and no health insurance. I bet he'd sing a different tune.

Correct. Perfect analysis. Senators enjoy socialized medicine - the rest of us pay for their healthcare. Yet they oppose it for the rest of us.

if you believe abortion is murder then money has no voice in the matter. It is part of your core belief system.--some people simply cannot murder their unborn child--that shouldn't be so hard to understand...
      • She who knows 1 mth 21 days ago
Apparently life is meaningless for some people, unless it is their own. In which case, they understand nothing.
      • gordito 1 mth 21 days ago
No one is forcing anyone to have an abortion. Period. If you want a baby have one. If you don't it is your own business. You evangelicals think is abortion is legal then somehow it affects your choice. It does not. But of course if you believe in these religions how can you comprehend such a simple statement?
      • Carol W 1 mth 19 days ago
it is because people are being asked to support it--and the Obamacare widens the ability to get one. Some women have had 3 and 4 or more. Now they are asking for a new catagory called ''after birth abortions'' which is infanticide by a different name. the baby in the womb means nothing and now they want a new born to hold no value either. sorry but abortion is an abomination and one does NOt have to be religious to understand the value of human life-or life in general---dogs fight to defend their babies and yet you have a world full of people who want to simply throw their babies away. If you believe abortion is the murder of the unborn then of course you will have an opinion--I don't want my neighbors killed either for the convenience of anyone else--sorry gordito but it is not nothing--and it is not as simple as you are making it. If your statement was correct the santorum's wouldn't be receiving such criticism for raising and loving a child with this illness--the simple solution for all of you is to have destroyed this child they love in the womb--as I said--abomination....

He is way beyond a harmless hypocrite, he is in the POS and dangerous category. He wants to stay rooted in some 16h century religious philosophy. I really have to put the blame for this on the entire religious leadership. ALL professions have to adjust with the times, no one is exempt (doctors, lawyers, managers, engineers, carpenters, teachers, scitentists,). Why do we not have the same demands of our spiritual leaders!!!?? All women should be screened for pre-natal abnormalities. If we abort the 60% (or whatever the number is) this will ease the burden on the ones we miss. She already had one abortion, all they did here is DEFER the pain from THEM (a brief grieving period) to the poor child (3 yrs and counting). This is not what I call Courageous, but cowardice masked in religion.

Making political hay (poorly) over the health circumstances of an innocent little girl is beyond the pale. Andrew, you truly are a worthless POS

Santorum is ejaculation that should have been flushed instead of finding a receptive egg
    • gordito  •  1 mth 21 days ago
Why was Mrs Santorum just a day ago standing on the campaign platform making that stupid sweet smile at her husband while her 3 year old was --where?
    • Rex  •  San Francisco, California  •  1 mth 21 days ago
The creep Santorum shouldn't be ejected his personal business into the campaign! Who cares about his personal life if he is seeking to lead the nation? Who cares about his progeny? It's the nation that needs saving, not his gene pool.
    • John  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  1 mth 20 days ago
In what way does publicly burying Santorum (and his daughter, for that fact) serve any intelligent and compassionate talk about health care? And where is the hypocrisy? If his daughter were an illegal alien, she'd still be provided with quality health care at the tax-payer's expense. I also didn't read anything in this article that he is now advocating stem cell research or abortion. He suspends his run for president to be with his family when they need him and Yahoo finds some anonymous blogger to turn this into more hate from the left.

END Congressional Exemptions...Live in the America y'all legislate!
      • gator dude 3 mths ago
Absolutely!!! Term limits and no perks after your terms are up. This is a ridiculous system Congress has given itself causing them to live in LaLa Land.

Just what Ron Paul has been saying.
      • Alohafalls 3 mths ago
Health care is not free to members of congress, it is not unique to congress, any government worker is eligible for the same array of plans. Premiums are subsidized by the government as are most employer sponsored plans in the private sector.

I think the point here is..... why do our political leaders have better health insurance and benefits than most the American people? The reason is simple: the only thing they can agree on in Washington- is for their own benefit. Read the fine print: Not All Men Were Created Equal.
      • nobody 3 mths ago
some are more equal than others
      • Frank 3 mths ago
This is what Obama and the Dems are trying to push...universal healthcare. We pay for theirs and they don't have a problem with it. Now that we need it they say F.U.
      • And so it begins 3 mths ago
Let us not forget they can give themselves a raise every year. And not too many years pass that a raise was not taken. Not unlessl they get called on it when the rest of the country is hurting. But they need to get caught at it first
    • Laura  •  3 mths ago
All politician should have the same health care plan and benefits that the American people do.
      • M 3 mths ago
Or better yet, all Americans should have the same health care plan and benefits that the politicians do.

It's a reality for a lot of people, with jobs, with healthcare, I went to a garage sale this summer for young girl who needs a heart transplant, at fourteen she's already maxed out her insurance and her family is on their own. I see change boxes in convenience stores to pay for artificial legs for growing kids, insurances only buy one every five years. Is this really what we want?
    • Rachel  •  Richardson, Texas  •  3 mths ago
I think the hypocrisy is that he and all the others that have left congressional jobs still receive money and health care, that does not happen in the rest of working America. They are supposed to be serving the people not fleecing them.
    • Jerry Frost  •  3 mths ago
Just why are our congressmen and women allowed to give themselves taxpayer paid for health care after they leave office? Why are they allowed to give themselves pay raises? Why does their pay continue even after they no longer work for us? They certainly do not do anything we the people want from them when in office so why should they be paid after they are gone? What company will pay you for life after you leave their service? What company will continue to provide you and your family health care after you are no longer relevant in the company? I want my America back. Ron Paul 2012
    • Just Me.  •  3 mths ago
And, what parent wouldnt bankrupt themselves into oblivion to get their child the best care their money could buy. When the alternative is.....not spending the money to get your child the best care you could.....whatever the cost.
    • Chris C  •  Port Huron, Michigan  •  3 mths ago
House and Senate pay should be pegged to the average American's salary. They should be closely audited by a 3rd party to make sure they do not get kickbacks of any kind. That's the change in Washington we are all looking for.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  Cleveland, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
I am a liberal democrat and in no way support the Senator politically, I am also a father...my thoughts and prayers to you and your family sir.
