Saudi: 'Internal' matter if Japan buys Iran oil

CAIRO (AP) — A Saudi oil official said that whether Japan or other countries continue to buy Iranian oil was an "internal matter," reflecting the unease in many nations after the latest U.S. sanctions on Tehran and Iran's threats to choke off the Strait of Hormuz in response.

The comments by the Oil Ministry official were reported on Monday by the Saudi daily Al-Watan a day after Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba met with senior Saudi officials in the kingdom's capital, Riyadh.

The newspaper said that Japanese officials asked Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, to make up for the potential loss of Iranian oil for Japan. The Asian nation is now even more heavily dependent on oil and natural gas imports after last year's tsunami forced the shutdown of nuclear reactors.

The latest U.S. sanctions target Iran's central bank and are aimed at hindering Tehran's ability to receive payment for its oil exports.

Al-Watan quoted the senior Saudi official as saying that "the issue of buying or not buying oil from Iran is an internal matter to be decided by these countries." The official was not identified.

Still, Saudi officials have said that Gulf oil producers are ready to step in and offset any loss of Iranian oil in the market, though it remains unclear if the necessary pipelines that would reroute the oil away from the strait are all fully operational. One pipeline with a capacity of about 1.5 million barrels per day being built by the UAE has yet to be completed.

China, a major Iran oil importer, has resisted the sanctions effort. The Asian powerhouse's deputy foreign minister, Cui Tiankai, said Monday that China's trade relations with Iran have nothing to do with Tehran's nuclear program and that sanctions alone cannot resolve the dispute.

The West maintains that Iran is enriching uranium with an eye on developing a weapon, an allegation Tehran denies. Iran says its program is for purely peaceful purposes.

The official Saudi Press Agency said Gemba's meeting with Saudi Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi and other top officials "dealt with the current situation in the international oil market and the importance of its stability."

Iran has repeatedly raised the specter of closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a sixth of the world's oil flows, if the U.S. and its allies impose measures targeting its oil exports.

Many analysts and officials have played down the comments as bluster by the Islamic Republic, noting that such a move would hit Iran hard given that it receives over 80 percent of its government revenue from oil sales.

But on Sunday, an Iranian newspaper quoted a senior Revolutionary Guard commander as saying that the country's leadership had decided to close off the strait if its oil exports were targeted. The remark marked an escalation of earlier warnings that Tehran could easily close the waterway if it so desired.

The threats have rattled global oil markets, with the U.S. benchmark crude futures contract for February delivery hovering at slightly under $102 per barrel in electronic trading in Asia while its North Sea counterpart, Brent, was trading at above $113 per barrel in London.

Japan has been supportive of the U.S. and its allies' efforts to pressure Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But Asian buyers of Iranian crude, in particular Japan and South Korea, are worried about the impact of the sanctions both on international crude prices and their economies.

Gemba, who is on an eight-day Mideast tour that began Thursday, later traveled to Qatar where they discussed the effect of santions on the oil market. He is slated to travel to the United Arab Emirates for meetings there on Tuesday.

The US is putting pressure on it's subjects to honor it's sanctions against Iran. But where is Japan, India, Turkey and other proxies to get their crude. Saudi Arabia is not able to fill so big a gap. The congress did little thinking before approving sanctions which have gas prices in California at highest in history. That's too much pressure on allies and Americans by our corporate congress whose oil corporations make record profits regardless of sanctions. The Russians also make big profits with the sanctions though they're the ones against the sanctions. Saudi Arabia, Kuwaite, Oman and the other oil exporting countries also make profits and are all for sanctions. It's all corporate politics. Some of the richest corporations in the world are oil corporations. They love these conflicts.

if this is why our gas prices are so high, then why is the u.s. exporting oil? isn't that just contributing to the high prices at the pump?

Every county that exports oil, also imports oil. Iran has a lot of oil, but they import oil and oil services from other nations because they don't have the capability produce the oil, so they sell it as crude oil and let others refine it.

Gas prices are set per the oil market. Can prices be scaled back? Yes. However, its an international market, not just the US. We are prepared if this gets out of control. We just letting the market work it out. Keep in mind, we utilize more oil in the world than any nation. We are a patient people, but we are a people that know enough is enough.

Compared to most countries, the U.S. has some of the cheapest gas prices.

We need to announce that if certain elements of the saudi people deem it appropriate to over thrown and execute the entire saud family that is an internal matter. Why do we continue to sell islamic countries our best weapons? If they are to take us over let them spend their money building, researching and developing their own weapon systems. Also, the price of a barrel of oil should include the cost of protecting the shipping lanes, if you do not want to contribute to that then walk.

If they don't buy from us, they'll buy from France, Great Britain, Russia, China, or someone else.

Why don't we leave iran alone like we did to n. Korea and let nature take its course. Bombing innocent people is not the way to do it, as evidenced by iraq!

If it will affect our economies too, then we hesitate to join. You do it on your own. We will help you damage their economy, but not, if it will damage ours too.
What a bunch of idiots, snakes and hypocrites, all these people in the UN. Hijacked international agency. The agency of destruction of nations.

Sanctions clearly show u.s. & eu do not care about africans, arabians, asians with their care less attitude! Why bother with such down-right inconsiderate so called world power which is only interested to show their military might without a care for even their own asian, arabian, african allies?

America is intent on doing to Iran what it did to Iraq - weaken them with years of debilitating sanctions and then launch a military attack.

Surprising how little coverage there is on this whole matter--or maybe not, given how the news media coverage is driven by the viewer's desired flavor of the moment. Non-stop coverage of the Republican wanna-be's slapping each other around is more interesting to Americans than something that has the potential to explode gas prices in the next few months.

Toby Keith's gonna sing a song about it. Of course, he's going to add in how everybody but him in his family, including the first graders, has served in the military. Just in case we forget.

They just want to sale more nuclear tech to Iran. Russia is not the only country arming the world with nuclear waste and material. If China steps on Japans neck and blockades the island, the United States and it's people would allow this action. War has soured Americans, plus whos willing to send their children to fight, after seeing America booting out thousands of American Iraq war veterans; into a jobless America. At some point America will have to go it alone, or send more American children off to the grave.

If we allow China to put their foot on Japans neck, maybe the Japanese will grow a pair. Japan talks a good game, yet when they have to live up to partnership agreements they bail. Why are we trading with China, Japan or South Korea, when will signing trade pacts with these countries end and never be signed again. Just like Japan, and the lies told by the Japanese people; if it not fair to Americans or the world. Than it not good enough for the Japanese, Chinese, South Korea and other countries that supply weapons to harm American military personal. In some countries it's like we need "Big Faces" sale weapons to Americas enemy, harm America military "sons and daugthers"; all the while American polititcal leaders are insider trading on these trade pacts. Knowing all along that they are saling weapons, tech; and parts for nuclear development to countries like Iran, Vietman and Pakistan. Hear a point to consider: The Detroit auto show is take place in Detroit, Michigan, America sign a free trade pact with countries including South Korea, Japan and some others that hold super large trade surpluses. Yet how many American automobiles do you see rounding around in China, Japan or South Korea, oh so few; their streets are so much smaller than in America. I have not seem an American automobile with the steeering wheel to the right. While I was living in Japan, did I see American automobiles "yes", were they being brought by these folks "no"; why I was told they're to big plus this. Theres no place to park them dinosaurs, and Asia is a BMW; Benz countries. In UAE their taxi are Benz's

Saudi will make up for any loss. Case closed! If Saudi doesn't support the USA on this, they will eat radiation dust some day, and their family name will die! Never give an arsonist a zippo lighter.

Just remember the last time we cut off oil from Iran the country of California USA continued to purchase oil on the black market from Iran. That story died a quick death from the US governement side of things and the real story never developed or did anyone care as long as they have gas for the cars in California and it does not upset the apple cart.
