SC deputies find lost toddler after more than day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina toddler has been reunited with his family after being lost for more than a day in woods near his home and spending a rainy night outdoors as temperatures dropped into the low 40s.

The 21-month-old boy, Jason Burton, was examined by doctors at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and described as being in good condition for his night alone in the elements.

About 200 people searched for the boy from the time he disappeared from his home early Friday afternoon.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said a deputy and a state natural resources officer kayaking on the Tyger River about two miles upstream from the boy's home spotted Jason sleeping on a log beneath an embankment. He was flown by helicopter to a command post where officers and his parents were waiting.

The boy's family told deputies that Jason must have walked out the front door while his mother was in the bathroom.

so happy to hear the little guy is safe and unharmed...little kids can get away very quickly...I do hope they can afford to put a lock on the top of the door now, so it doesn't happen again...Better safe than sorry, since they know he is capable and willing to go on his own now....Merry Christmas all...this good ending story should set the right mood for everyone to believe in miracles.....

couldn't agree more! For once a story with a happy ending!

Yes, a simple hook and eye will do the trick.

Wanna hear something really stupid though. I do daycare, I have hook and eyes on my screen doors, the state inspector said I couldn't use those because it's considered 'blocking an exit'. If there was a fire the kids couldn't get out....really, and where am I going to be, out shopping?

I thought the story was going to endup that He was raised by wild Grissly Bear's or something, that would be neat!

i've got kids....watch your #$%$ kid why don't u and that won't happen!!!they're my priority. i'm a chef...no special security training or anything and i know how to be smarter than a toddler and not let up that vigilant attitude. just ask yourselves...all of you who are on the mom's side on this...could this have been avoided? or was this totally and completely out of her control. i mean, what's worse, having a dead son, or having him maybe in the bathroom with her?

Thank God the child is ok! I know small children can get away from you in a flash. I do hope the mother will install latches at the top of her doors in the future.

      • cara 5 mths ago
hey netball, lets put YOU in charge of a 21 month old 24/7 for, oh....lets say, 2 days. bet you my bottom dollar you won`t last! i can`t STAND it when someone who a) isn`t a hands-on father and b) doesn`t have kids of his own passes judgement.

i laugh at the comments about putting latches up high.. ya that is good as long as they also hide the chairs, hide the toys and perhaps ties the kid up. our neighbor had high latches and their 2 year old overcame tham in 20 seconds. this was a boy being a boy. PERIOD!!!!!!! not neglect or even bad judgment.

To the mother. They get away...... so just watch him a little more is all, do not restrict him due to this and don't blame yourself. Also apparently at 21 months you have a WALKER. He see's his feet and facinating enough they also move and he is in awe of this. Can't stop it. Just be aware. I thought about taking mine to the vet for a chip many many times..................Smiles.

Never, never NEVER trust a toddler! They inherently are Houdinis and are bound to break your heart if given the chance. See how resilient he is? Mom's having apoplexy and he's sleeping on a log. I'm glad he's found and I predict a leash in his future.

the people whining about the parents must not have ever had a 2 year old boy. they are fast little creatures and can be a block away in seconds, There is nothign quite like them. The best parents in the world had this heppen to them. I am glad he is safe but i am guessing the house is like fort knox now, but he will find a way and at least try to get back out, he would not be normal if he didn't.

The most helpless ceature on earth is the human infant. This little guy had no idea how much danger he was in. I am sure when he got tired he just sat down and went to sleep. Cold and tired and hungry, he was in the arms of the angels. I am sure the night was pure hell for his parents. Imagining all kinds of horror which can befall a child these days. We can all use a happy ending. Most missing children stories don't turn out this way.
As for the mom, well she probably just ran in the bathroom for a minute and he was occupied playing. We sometimes forget just how quick those little folks can move. No parent deserves a life long heartache for a moment's lapse in judgement.
Maybe everyone can just feel a little gratitude for his safe return.

So glad he's been found and is safe. It takes only a moment for a child to wander away. My 3 year old followed our dog out of the yard one afternoon when I went inside to get his snack. Poof. An hour later, he was found with the dog by a neighbor, walking around like it was no big deal. The ending could have been so different for both of them. God watches out for little children and fools. Not sure which category we fell into.

unfortunately these terrifying incidents happen thousands of times everyday as it takes only seconds for toddlers to vanish from parents' sight... fortunately this incident had a happy ending in time for christmas. other's have not been so lucky. do we need government to pass yet another law requiring toddler proof locks on all exiting doors that latch automatically? i hope not.

I could not imagine the horror those poor parents went through.
    • DiscoDuck  •  5 mths ago
Being a mother myself, I would have been absolutely hysterical. So many things could and do happen to children every day, but at least he's safe now and not a statistic. I'm happy for this family.

I can't tell you how many times my kids have ran off like this. I spent hours looking for my son one time, only to find him in his closet sound asleep. I've set my son other son down, turned around to make a bottle for his brother only to find out my two year old was MIA. I found him on his big wheel, two blocks down. Yea, they are better Houdini then Old Harry himself. It really only takes 10 seconds for them to manage to escape and it will always come as a suprise when they do. And forget child proofing. If it's too good, you'll never get out. And usually the kids manage to figure it out before you do.

For all of you who think that this could not happen to you, I have a story for ya. When I was young, about 2 or 3, I too disappeared from my mothers presence. She was looking everywhere for me and I'm sure she was frantic. Thankfully I was tired and had crawled into my crib for a nap. Probably the last place anyone looks for their child. She was very surprised to find me there.
