'Scary snowman' returns to scare the sugarplums out of holiday shoppers

It's become an annual tradition: A man, dressed as a snowman, stands motionless until unsuspecting passersby approach, then jolts them with a sudden movement.

Freaky, Frosty the Snowman's evil twin, has been at it since 2011, pranking everyone from Times Square revelers to beachgoers on the Jersey shore.

In the latest installment, Freaky returned to Cambridge, Mass., for the second year in a row. Fittingly, he was stationed outside an ice cream shop, ready to "terrorize" pedestrians.

"Everybody, they get scared at first and then laugh at themselves,” Jay Lichtenberger, one of the pranksters behind Freaky, told Boston Magazine. "They realize how silly it is. Boston has a great sense of humor."

The snowman scared plenty of passersby, including joggers, students and selfie-takers. Freaky even turned down a cash tip from an impressed driver.

At one point, a woman hit on the man behind the suit.

"Are you sexy underneath that costume?" the woman asked, clutching her hot chocolate. "Will I ever get to see what you look like? No? Well, if you're sexy you should want to show if off."

“I like it when people stand around and have a conversation with him," Lichtenberger said. "They realize how silly it is. Boston has a great sense of humor." It’s that type of interaction that makes me laugh.”
