Scientists: Haiti, DR may facing big quake period

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic could be in for a period of periodic powerful earthquakes, according to a scientific study released Thursday.

The study says Haiti's 7.0-magnitude earthquake two years ago is likely to be the first of several quakes of a similarly powerful magnitude.

The Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake caused widespread damage in the Haitian capital and surrounding cities. Officials say the disaster killed 314,000 people and toppled thousands of crudely built homes.

"The 2010 Haiti earthquake may mark the beginning of a new cycle of large earthquakes on the Enriquillo fault system after 240 years of seismic quiescence," lead author William Bakun of the U.S. Geological Survey wrote. "The entire Enriquillo fault system appears to be seismically active; Haiti and the Dominican Republic should prepare for future devastating earthquakes."

The authors document a series of four major earthquakes of magnitude 6.6 and higher that struck Hispaniola, the Caribbean island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The phase began in 1701, near the site of the 2010 quake, and ended in 1770.

There was no evidence of significant earthquake activity on the Enriquillo fault system in the 240 years from 1770 until the 2010 disaster, except for an earthquake in 1860 that likely occurred offshore, the study said.

The possibility that a newly active period has begun underscores the need for Haiti and the Dominican Republic to focus on building seismic-proof structures, Bakun said.

"Whatever information people have to guide reconstruction efforts in Haiti ... is certainly useful," Bakun said by telephone from Merlo Park, California.

The study appears in the February edition of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

Moderate quakes have struck the Dominican Republic in recent weeks but there were no reports of damage.

Hopefully the scientists are better educated than the person that wrote the headline.

Scientists are telling the poorest people on the planet to take what they have and build quake proof buildings? REALLY??!!?? How is this going to happen?

Did anyone see the photos of the slums and "crudely built homes" the people of Haiti were living in BEFORE the earthquake?! What makes anyone think they are capable of "building seismic-proof structures"?!?!

Given the budget available to an average Hatian, the most realistic earthquake proof structures that they will be able to afford is a grass hut or a teepee. They're easy to rebuild and if they colapse, the worst thaey can cause is a bump on the head.

So much money went to Haiti charities after the earthquake, all residents should already be in quake proof digs... where did all that money go anyway???

Earthquakes all over the world are getting more frequent and larger on the scale. There was a 6.3 one in Japan yesterday. It isn't just happening in Haiti, as when one plate shifts, they all shift , on some level, though not necessarily causing large damage.

For all of you that doubt earthquake prediction is possible, please do some research. There are plenty of sites and persons who have been successfully shown that there is at least correlation between certain actions and then earthquakes happen. I know a gentleman on FB I have followed who has predicted 12 of the last 14 earthquakes to hit that were over 6.0. He is now predicting where they will occur. He has hit that 4 times in a row. He is using 2 different ideas together. Rising Heat over the area (region) and space travel (yeah I know, it's weird). He does not believe all earthquakes are caused by this. He states that just the 6.0+ quakes. I was as skeptical as a Chris Chase reader, but I checked it out. The data is scary. It is pretty clear to me at least from the data that it is amazingly coincidental that 6.0 quakes happen after real LARGE objects are shot into space and again when they land. I found only one shuttle mission that this data didn't fit. Within 72 hours of every takeoff and landing there was a 6.0 quake. During the space race 6.0 earthquakes were almost common. We didn't know a lot about them cuz global communications to the masses had not yet arrived. The heat over the region predictor has predicted up 40 quakes I think over the last few years. So it is at least a good reading experience.

i hope someone competent is superivising rebuilding in haiti. that place had some of the worst construction in the world which is why an earthquake that would do nothing in California is an appocalypse there. all the crushing weight and expense of steel and concrete to give the apperance of a proper building, but none of the intelligence in arranging it to have any actual structural strength.

What a shame that today's journalists and editors don't have a working knowledge of the English language.
