Scores killed in shelling of Syrian city of Homs

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian troops bombed residential neighborhoods in the central city of Homs Wednesday for the fifth straight day, killing scores of people in what activists say is the regime's final push to retake areas controlled by the rebels.

The violence comes as President Bashar Assad's regime is becoming increasingly isolated over its bloody crackdown on dissent. Five European countries and six Arab Gulf nations have pulled their ambassadors out of Damascus, and the U.S. has closed its embassy in Syria. Germany, whose whose envoy Syria this month, also said he would not be replaced.

But Assad was bolstered Tuesday by a visit from Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Sergey Lavrov and the country's intelligence chief, Mikhail Fradkov. In the talks in Damascus, the Russians pushed for a solution to the Syrian crisis that would include reforms by the regime and a dialogue with the opposition — but not for Assad to step down.

During the meeting, Assad said Syria is determined to hold a national dialogue with the opposition and independent figures, saying his government was "ready to cooperate with any effort that boosts stability in Syria," according to the Syrian state news agency SANA.

The Syrian opposition rejects any talks with the regime and says they accept nothing less than Assad's departure.

On Saturday, Russia and China blocked a Western- and Arab-backed U.N. Security Council resolution supporting calls for Assad to hand over some powers as a way to defuse the 11-month-old crisis.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 50 people were killed in Wednesday's shelling of the Homs neighborhoods of Bayadah, Baba Amr, Khaldiyeh and Karm el-Zeytoun. The group also said that 23 homes were heavily damaged in Baba Amr alone.

Omar Shaker, an activist in Baba Amr, said his neighborhood was under "very intense shelling" by tanks, mortars, artilleries and heavy machine guns. Shaker added that he counted five bodies Wednesday in his district.

"The situation is dire. We are short of food, water and medical aid. Doctors have collapsed after treating the wounded without rest for five days," Shaker said. "We want Lavrov to come and spend a night in Homs to see what we have been passing through."

The activist urged the international community to set up a safe passage so that women and children can leave volatile areas of Homs. The head of the Observatory, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said the regime was trying "exhaust rebels in preparation for storming neighborhoods."

The Observatory and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, also reported intense clashes between troops loyal to Assad and defectors on Wednesday in the province of Idlib, bordering Turkey. The Observatory said at least five soldiers were killed in the clashes.

The U.N. estimates the government crackdown has killed more than 5,400 people since March, making Syria's conflict one of the deadliest of the Arab Spring.

Hundreds more are believed to have died since the U.N. released that figure in January, but the chaos in the country has made it impossible for the world body to update its figures.

So after we've stood up for the revolution and helped them overthrown Assad, they will then intitute Sharia law and mercilessly persecute and murder the approx. 2 mil Christians in Syria. Why should we expect any different outcome than we're seeing in Egypt? It's a catch 22 senario.

Michael is right, unfortunately most Americans don't even know that Christians live in Syria and are currently protected by Assad's government.

This is a major catch 22...we do nothing, and we are guilty of inaction and complacency. We go in, and we are one again viewed as meddlers in the Middle East and further in demand to police a world we do not have the resources to police, thus making others view us as playing favorites and resnting us when we do not go in to other regions. You may not like Obama as a President, but you gotta admit, at this moment his job is one most sane people would not want given situations like this and the stakes at risk.

Lets see, China and Russia do nothing to help any of the so called Freedom Fighters, etc. in these nations, but once they become full terrroist states, they will not direct their hatred to Russia or China. Once again, crazy friggin Arabs. Best thing to do is let them kill each other an let Muhammad sort them out.

This time lets let Iraq, Egypt,Lybia and all the other Middle Eastern countrys force Syria to tow the line we have helped them fix their problems, now it's time they start taking the bull by the horns

All the U.S. Government has done in the last 60 years in the Middle East is prop up puppet government and dictators in the Middle East to keep them weak for the benefit of Israel and Western nations stealing their natural resources. For the amount of blood and treasure we've spent there we could have purchased most of the oil already. Let's fix our own problems here at home and MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS.

You are poorly informed. Iraq is allied with Syria. Egypt is a basket case. Libya is a country rife with simian tribal problems. Grow up and stop sniffing airplane glue.

"The Syrian opposition rejects any talks with the regime and says they accept nothing less than Assad's departure."

Shouldn't we get rid of the opposition first ? Then everything back to normal !

How can you people judge who is right and who is wrong in the conflict and take any side based on distorted media information. This is what the UN wanted to do, to support so-called rebels. Russian and Chine vetoed that draft resolution for they wanted fair game game played. If UN troops were ever to enter Syria they had to be impartial and not to take any side. What the draft UN resolution wanted was the existing regime diplaced. According to alternative sources, whatever is written in the western media is not true. The ligitimate government there re is allegedly opposed by a gang of thugs, murderers and looters who are seeking the western support in their plot. None of those ostensibly ongoing mass killing of civilians by government forces is actually is actually taking place. This kind of information war when events are distorted is waged not for the first time. So, people, be careful not to bite everything you read and hear!

Syria is a humanitarian issue that the United States and the United Nations need to support by air dropping food and medical supplies; the United Nations Security Council veto by Russia and China might be an issue of economics based on the Bashar al-Assad regime purchase of costly armaments from Russia and China. The removal of the Bashar al-Assad regime means a loss of revenue to Russia and China. The United States Department of State (State Department or DoS) along with Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) need to ensure that United States will not arm or supply Military ad-visors or combat ad-visors til there is a clear understanding of of the opposition.I believe in freedom, I support democracy and I supported the Libyan Revolution / Libyan Uprising especially after the heinous atrocity perpetrated against Iman al-Obeidi / Eman al-Obeidy but the power vacuum created after the defeat and the death of Muammar Gaddafi led to a new round and equally troubling action of ethnic cleansing and genocide to Tawergha and its residents along with targeting of black Libyans and sub-Saharan Africans.Inadvertently, good intentions by the United States in an attempt to liberate opened the gates of hostile dissension for the sunni versus #$%$ conflict and Kurdish. Will the support of the United States and the United Nation once again lead to another sunni vs #$%$ or another ethnic genocide? If the possibility remotely exist then the Syrian people shouldn't receive arms or be supplied Military ad-visors or combat ad-visors; only food, water and medical supplies.

Rather than look at Syria we should be looking at how this is starting to happen in the United States.................. I'm not a radical ,,,,,,,,,, Government has over rode the constitution since 2001 , People are getting poorer, Activists are being silenced, seriously I think we need to worry about our country before it goes any farther.
