    San Luis Obispo County is the only region in California that features an elephant seal rookery and a butterfly grove within just miles of each other, and now is the best time of year for day trips to visit them both.

    Bring binoculars and a camera to Wine Coast Country this January through early March, the perfect time of year to see hundreds of newborn Northern Elephant Seals, tens of thousands of orange and black Monarch Butterflies and hundreds of majestic California Gray Whales and Blue Whales as they migrate from the Arctic to the warm southern regions off the coast.

    “I love the various samplings of different marine habitats and wildlife in the region,” said Priscilla Kiessig, a longtime resident of the area and executive director of Avila Beach Sea Life Center. “We have the chance to see elephant seals up close and personal. Hundreds of them line the beach in San Simeon to bask in the sun for months at a time.”

    At last count, the vibrant butterflies in the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach, CA were 21,000 strong. This region is a Mecca for migrating wildlife but also boasts plentiful activities for visitors including lavish lodging options, amazing restaurants that feature locally grown ingredients, and more than 250 wineries.
