SEALs cringe but hope film blitz draws recruits

Washington (AP) — Navy SEALs never expected the film "Act of Valor," starring active-duty SEALs, to be this big.

SEAL commanders allowed independent filmmakers, the Bandito Brothers, into their elite ranks to turn real-life training exercises into a feature-length movie to attract recruits.

They thought the film might open in a couple of theaters in military towns, then quietly move to cable. Then came last year's SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Now the film is opening Feb. 24 in 2,500 theaters nationwide.

SEALs who have seen the movie say its action scenes are mostly accurate and don't reveal too much about SEAL operations.

There will always be arguments over who is tougher etc. SEALS, Green Berets, DELTA, and many, many more. Sorry but neither Israel or the U.S. have the toughest soldiers. That distinction goes to the shorties from Nepal. The Gurkhas. Ask anyone that has fought with them or against them.

Audy Murphy played himself in the movie To Hell and Back, which was about his exploits during WWII. It's not new for soldiers to be in movies. It's how they keep recruitment up because you too could be a star.

      Another headline story.

We have the best soldiers in the world, with the possible exception of Israel.

The cringing is top secret and sensitive info. Government edit...Propaganda to call out to young men and women wishing to murder.Re examine the oath taken during inception....And ask yourself why are you not defending the constitution....................

I have the utmost respect for these brave men not so much their commanders (field commanders yes, DC commanders no). However I was under the impression that SEALS were to get in, accomplish mission, get out and under best case scenario nobody even knew they were there. I am confused as to how starring in a movie accomplishes anything except putting a larger target on the chests of these men and those who support them, ie medics, other ground troops etc... The commanding officers need to consider the broader consequences of their actions/decisions. You may enjoy watching it but if it costs one soldier his life or limb or sanity then that is a poor trade off.

We were fortunate to have attended an early screening of Act of Valor. Don't miss it. Awesome action, stunts, effects, explosions, camera work . . . not a documentary style by any means. I observed even men crying at one point and left the theater feeling not worthy of what the SEALS do for us.

Really should have figured how popular it would be. Honest-to-god, REAL, SEALs in the movie. Some of our country's bravest heroes and NOT actors. Of course, everyone wants to see it. I think it's great, as long as it doesn't compromise them or their operations. That is certainly more important than making a movie.

Too all the people that will want to go overseas and kill some "bad guys" after this movie. Do me a favor and ask yourselves, "what if another country sent soldiers to ours and killed our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, nieces, and nephews?" Wake up people!

I guess someone never told you that there are a lot of people out there that hate the U.S.

Good thought, but are your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and nieces making bombs to blow up people? There just *may* be a slight distinction there.
      • Redd 3 mths ago
@Donzi : Actually we make quite a few bombs here in America.

Never should have allowed film makers any where near SEALs. Even our mighty SEALs seduced by the camera. The more in the public eye they are, the less effective they become. Some things should be beyond the prying eyes of our "reality" and celebrity obsessed culture. Is everything to be fodder for our entertainment?

So this was a recruitment effort so we could continue these unconstitutional wars? Thanks for tell me, I'll be sure to not watch it.

        Sissy.

unconstitutional? Both were fully approved by congress and the president. Saddam had murdered hundreds of thousands of his own countrymen and personally let out the lie that he was holding WMD's while kicking out the inspectors (he said in interviews he didn't want his army to appear weak to other countries so he got the word out he had WMD's). He tried to assasinate US presidents (Kuwaits intelligence caught them before they could implement the assasination, supported terrorism financially, and gave terrorists a place to stay, they committed genocide many times. He was a truly evil person on the same line as Adolf Hitler.

As for Afghanistan, they were allowing terrorists to operate out of their country freely. They were brutal in their treatment of women. They were very active in human trafficing in the sex slave market. They would systematically massacre civilians and starve them out (deny UN emergency food). They would execute children, raze entire towns and put the entire population into forced labor. This was truly an evil group.

Our Constitution says that we WILL send our solders to other countries to neutralize threats to this country or countries of our friends. Read it for yourself.

This movie is a very cheap stunt. You'll never see US Army CAG ("Delta") personnel stooping to this level. But, think about it, the US Navy has nothing else to be proud of. It's always been the "service" of draft-dodgers, dung-punchers and drunks.
      • Daniel L 3 mths ago
Are you talking about the same Delta Force that led the debacle in Somalia??? You know from that movie Black Hawk Down??
      • TJ 3 mths ago
Son, the Delta operators had NO influence on failed policies in Somolia. They did as they were ordered to do and made the best of a disastrous situation. BTW, Navy SEALs are participated in "Black Hawk Down." They were depicted in the movie. The difference is that Delta operators demonstrated far more bravery and impact on that incident than did SEALs.

@Daniel, have you ever served in the military??? If you had you would know that not every mission is a "Success". Sometimes bad things happen. If you recall how many civilans were saved??? Yes it cost some soldiers their lives but thats our job. It's to protect people, and sometimes we die doing it. So yes the "debacle in Somalia" to you was a failure but to us it was a success.
