‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ Review: Pete Hammond Happily Checks In
As I put it in my video review above, the movie business’ favorite set of geezers are back and in fine form in the sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Returning from the 2011 hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are such stalwarts as Judi Dench, Maggie Smith (now playing co-manager of the hotel), Bill Nighy and Dev Patel, along with Tina Desai, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle and Celia Imrie.
Also checking in are Tamsin Greig and, in a bit of a surprise but a quite welcome one, Richard Gere. He is both the handsome new visitor and perhaps the undercover evaluator secretly checking out the Marigold for the corporate chain that might want to franchise the hotel.
John Madden directs, from Ol Parker’s screenplay. Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin produced for Participant Media and Blueprint Pictures. Fox Searchlight, which also joined in producing the film as well the first one, is handling U.S. distribution for the film, which debuts this weekend. It’s already began its international rollout with encouraging numbers.
