Secret Service Agent Commits Suicide

A Secret Service agent committed suicide last week following an internal investigation over his extramarital affair, the Associated Press reports.

Rafael Prieto, 47, was a married father who had an extramarital affair with a Mexican woman for over six years. After a fellow employee brought his affair into question, an internal investigation was launched. Prieto committed suicide as the investigation was ongoing, the service told AP.

The coworker who brought attention to the affair was concerned in the wake of a Secret Service prostitution scandal that rocked the detail in April. The investigation centered on a rule over relationships with foreigners. The AP said there was no indication his relationship posed a security threat.

Prieto was on President Obama’s security detail, though he was not on duty at the time of his death. He worked for the Secret Service for 22 years.

“Rafael Prieto had a distinguished 20-year career with the Secret Service that was marked by accomplishment, dedication and friendships," agency spokesman Edwin Donovan said. "The Secret Service is mourning the loss of a valued colleague.”
