Secret Service says bullet hit White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Secret Service says a bullet hit an exterior window of the White House and was stopped by ballistic glass.

An additional round of ammunition was found on the White House exterior. The bullets were found Tuesday morning. A spokesman for the Secret Service, Edwin Donovan, declined to answer additional questions about the incident including the caliber bullets recovered or what room of the White House was behind the window that was hit, citing an ongoing criminal investigation.

The discovery follows reports of gunfire near the White House on Friday. Witnesses heard shots and saw two speeding vehicles in the area. An assault rifle was also recovered.

President Barack Obama, who was headed to a summit in Hawaii, was not at the home at the time of the shooting.

The Secret Service said it has not conclusively connected Friday's incident with the bullets found at the White House. Previously, authorities had said the White House did not appear to have been targeted Friday night.

U.S. Park Police have an arrest warrant for Oscar Ortega-Hernandez, who is believed to be connected to the earlier incident. He is described as a 21-year-old Hispanic man, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 160 pounds, with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair.

He is believed to be living in the Washington area with ties to Idaho.

After the gunfire was reported, police said they found an abandoned car Friday night near the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge that crosses the Potomac River to Virginia.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser has said items found in the vehicle led investigators to Ortega. The suspect hasn't been linked to any radical organizations but does have an arrest record in three states, Schlosser said Monday.

In 2010, there were a series of pre-dawn shootings at military buildings in the Washington area, including the Pentagon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Police charged a Marine Corps reservist with those shootings earlier this year. The suspect, Yonathan Melaku of Alexandria, Va., remains in custody.

did the idiot really think bullets would penetrate any part of the White House?

        I believe idiots don't think

Am I reading this right? Did somebody do a drive-by on the White House.
      That's...different.

What's scary is that the Secret Service just found on Friday bullet that hit a window and another one somewhere on the grounds on TUESDAY, 4 days after the shots. Also amazing that these 2 cars got away. Also, that they cannot tie the other bullet found to Friday's incident, which means it could have happened any other time and they didn't know about it? Was there a shooting toward the White House that the Secret Service wouldn't know about?
      • Felix 6 mths ago
Maybe Secret Service guys just don't like both Obamas and are not in the rush to investigate this incident. I bet Barak and Michelle #$%$ off so many people in the White House, that those people can't wait until they both are gone for good.

Maybe it's just hard to get good help anymore, including in the SS

"Also, that they cannot tie the other bullet found to Friday's incident, which means it could have happened any other time and they didn't know about it?"

It probably happened Friday, but without any evidence (i.e. the actual gun used), they probably don't have anything from Friday night they can tie it to.

I often wonder if the FBI monitors the comments posted on these boards.

I guarantee you they do. I still have fun with it though! :)

lets hope...cause they arent monitoring the Eric Holder justice department selling guns to drug cartels.

They recovered an AK-47? Doesn't say where or how. And...how do they know who the shooter is? There's way more to this story than the couple of lousy paragraphs above. The guy would have to be a pretty crazy or stupid person to do a drive by shooting at the white house. Geez.
      • mustang 6 mths ago
You ever been to D.C.? The average resident there is not blessed with much brain matter.
The story is incomplete because the Secret Service isn't giving out much information at this point. And they won't...until someone is in custody.
      • Scout 6 mths ago
This was more of an update to an earlier story. They found one of the cars abandoned a few blocks away with the AK inside it. The other story said the police don't think they were firing at the White House. Though once fired a bullet cares not where it goes.

Boo Hoo little Derek is all upset again because he either does not like the author, article or content. You would think that at some point might figure out that it is better to just stay away from a place you hate.

Wouldnt it be ironic if the gun came from "Fast And Furious"...?
    • Gary N  •  6 mths ago
So we're supposed to believe someone took two shots at the White House and then dropped the weapon and ran? That makes no sense.

Reported Friday and found bullet Tuesday? Get right on it!

So, you can shoot at the White House and people just wonder what that pop, pop was? This story smacks of #$%$ bigtime!

My, my! A hispanic with an AK47. He probably got it from Eric Holder's "Fast and Furious" gun mall. #$%$ Lost track of another one Mr. Holder?
    • Protostar  •  6 mths ago
The White House is right next to the ghetto, I am not surprised it catches a bullet now and then from the drug dealers and pimps who are shooting at each other.

If it turns out to be guns that the administration sold, the story will be buried...

So the question that everyone wants to ask but hasn't - Is Oscar Ortega-Hernandez an American citizen?
I'm just curious because it could give some insight to his motivation (providing that he was the individual who fired at the white house).
    • Kris  •  Irvine, United States  •  6 mths ago
I am outraged at the shooting, but many of the comments here are plain stupid. The Republicans as a whole are not trying to get the president shot, for God's sake. They just want him out of the white house. Anyone who thinks that Republicans or Democrats as a whole want to resort to murder to get what they want is STUPID!.

"Fast and Furious" comes home to roost........
    • steve  •  6 mths ago
They (the Secret Service) recovered the weapon (AK-47) rather fast....or did they? I am really finding it hard to believe that the security of the White House would be so lax. After seeing this administration (Obama and Holder) squirm around the Fast and Furious scandal, could this be another ploy played on the American people to get them to give up more of their 2nd Amendment rights? Watching the way this bunch operates over the last 3 years, they would never let a crisis go to waste but would they go so far as to create one?

      looks like typical Occupy Protester.
    • mh  •  6 mths ago
Possibly a Fast and Furious Mexican victim just returning the gun Obama and Holder provided the drug cartels. Maybe he was upset that hundreds of his relatives were killed by the guns from the criminal in the Great White Puzzle Palace and his criminal Attorney General. The poor man is not above the law and neither is Obama and Holder.

No one leaves the weapon at the scene. Sometimes they have to ditch it in the sewer, dumpster or throw it on a roof, but that's handguns, and when on foot, not rifles with a getaway vehicle involved. Drive the weapon from the scene and dispose of it, that's how it's done. Fast and furious didn't work as intended, so now they're trying the "drive-by" on the White House? Bad smell from this "story".
