See Inside The £1.85m Yacht That Will Be Entirely Powered By The Sun

Fancy setting sail on the high seas, but without leaving a carbon footprint?

Then that dream could soon be coming true, as the world’s first zero emissions yacht is almost ready for market.

Turkish group Ned Ship and renewable energy firm Solarwave have been working on the Solarwave 62’ for the last seven years.

While other yachts use solar panels for just part of their operations, the new boat will run entirely from the sun’s rays.

The first model is expected to be ready within the next two months and will have a reported price tag of between £1.47 million and £1.85 million.

Measuring 62ft in length, it will be able to cruise at speeds between seven and 13 knots.

But Ned Ship marketing director Egon Faiss said potential buyers must beware that handling and using the new yacht will be significantly different to sailing standard ones.

“The owners must know that on green yachts there will be different handling, and they will have to use the yacht at a speed that is different to traditional fuel based models,” Faiss said.

“You cannot go full speed for several hours, as this will be not be an intelligent way to handle a solar yacht,” Faiss added.

Owners will also have to be diligent when it comes to using appliances in the yacht’s full kitchen.

Each Solarwave 62’ will be configured to the owner’s wishes and its designers believe it will hold its value better than conventional yachts.

Some of its features include three to five guest cabins, depending on the buyer’s preference, a retractable sky roof, and an outdoor dining space and sun deck.

Faiss added: “We’ve been thinking for a while about such systems, but now the time is for real luxury yachts based on green energy.

"If you drive a Tesla full speed there will be really not a long range. But to drive one is so much fun - especially having no noise. That’s the same on the solar yachts.”
