Senate approves payroll tax cut, jobless benefits

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has approved a two-month renewal of payroll tax cuts for every worker and unemployment benefits for millions, moving President Barack Obama closer to a convincing victory over Republicans who control the House.

The measure buys time for negotiations early next year on how to pay for a year-long extension of the two percentage point payroll tax cut, the centerpiece of Obama's fall jobs agenda. It would boost the paycheck of the average worker making a $50,000 salary by about $20 a week.

The House is expected to clear the measure shortly, capping a swift retreat by House Republicans. Their move to force a holiday season confrontation with Obama and Senate Democrats had threatened to hit 160 million workers with a tax increase on Jan. 1, and it backfired badly.

The only thing that seperates these politicians from the corner crack dealer is a $1500 suit and a microphone. They don't care about you! They are there for their own advancement. If you get in their way you will lose some more liberty and another tiny amount from your earnings.

Hurry up... hurry up.... we want to go home for the holidays!!!
      • Sherri 5 mths ago
A month long one at that. How many everyday Americans get that for their holiday break? I know I don't. Especially for accomplishing nothing once again.

just more political theatre. This only delays more, with No real solutions to the financial problems of this country. again I say, TERM LIMITS !
      • GrammarCop 5 mths ago
Amen to term limits...if the pols won't do it we can vote them out ourselves!!!

We borrow money from China to pay the loan from China... Take money from Social Security to give a short term break that will mean nothing compared to the loss of Social Security. WOW

You might as well written,"I don't have a clue about what's in the Bill, but Fox told me this."
SS loses NO money at all from this Bill. Check for yourself and you'll see this is a fact.

Not sure how any objective person can call delaying the same problem for only two months a convincing victory. This is so pathetic - there are such large problems looming. This is the equivalent of bailing out the Titanic with Dixie cups.
I balance my budget every month. No big deal- I just do it. No applause - it just has to happen. Both parties of both houses of Congress, as well as our President should be embarrassed that this is the best they could come up with.

All this fuss over 2%, what is going to happen when we face the 43% that we are borrowing on every dollar? 15 trillion dollars in debt and the whole goverment is to blame. So we keep spending, the projected debt in 10 years 25 trillion. I guess everybody is ok with that. I feel sorry for my grandkids. Then we had the spin from the white house over the forty dollars, AP had a story showing where 48% of our country is poor. How does that work, fifty folks on min wage and one millionare, makes an average of $50,000 a year? Now that's how to get any number you want.

Where is your concern for the half trillion the Bush tax breaks for the rich cost us yearly? Where is your concern for the corporate loopholes that, if closed, would generate as much revenue as our current income tax system does? You people cannot go on fattening the wealthy and corporations at the expense of tax payers and then scream deficit, deficit, deficit everytime someone wants to help the elderly or middle class. No one takes you serious anymore because of your bias.
      • IRONPANTS 5 mths ago
So how much have the 2 decade long wars cost us? Did we gain anything but more dead soldiers and grieving widows? No but it sure did make a lot of Bush's friends richer. Research it.

So we get to do ALL of this again in less than sixty days. BTW, Barry...great idea for setting-up the 12-member "super committee" to do the job that 535 couldn't do and SURPRISE, neither could six Dems and six Reps...WHAT A SURPRISE! Just keep kickiing the can a few steps further down the street on so much legislation and it's no wonder little to nothing gets done in D.C.!! I don't recall EVER seeing so much political posturing as with this president and this congress!! Disgraceful.
    • John  •  5 mths ago
These politicians don't care about middle class and they don't care about you or what you think. They are in Washington to separate you from your money so that their corporate sponsors can profit. If you lose some liberty or freedom in the process, then so be it. Thats the way it is going to be. All this partisan wrangling here means nothing. What you are seeing in Washington is one corporation fighting another for control of your money. Nothing else.

Social Security was not where the cuts should have come from. A good goverment looks out for your future! This is sad!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Let me see if I've got this right. When the Democrats agree on passing something it's called "bi-partisanship" but when the Republican's agree to pass something it's called, "CAVING!" The "press", and I use that term very, very loosly is supposed to be unbiased, has always been pro-democrat, ALWAYS! Disgusting!

For people making $50k, it's about $20 per week. For some, it's $10 per week and if you don't have a job, you get nothing. And this is for 2 months instead of 12 months. What a big fight for so little. Anyone think this was all about something else?

It was during CNN's morning news reports when the House brought this bill up for vote, and passed it.

I am for the payroll tax cut extension, extension of unemployment benefits (which may continue to help me until I can start my own work -- nobody wants people 60 years old anymore), I am for keeping the Social Security untouched, and I am for assisting doctors in gettng their full medicare payments.....................HOWEVER, I am NOT for approval of the Keystone XL pipeline (not matter WHAT route it takes, because the coal tar sands "goo" which will be traveling through that pipeline is SO toxic and corrosive, per a pipeline worker who refuses to work on the pipeline, that THAT is why the pipes keep leaking.......the coal tar substance eats RIGHT THROUGH SOLID STEEL ! ! ! ! )

Plus, I keep reading comments about those pipeline jobs being only temporary, NOT permanent..........AND there will NOT be 200,000 to 300.000 jobs, per a Michigan woman who works for an agency that deals with that pipeline company (on previous smaller pipelines in Michigan) -- she says that pipeline company is notorious for claiming there will be way more jobs available ........than there actually will be.

Thus, I am for the rest of that "payroll tax cut" bill, but I will be praying (literally) for stoppage of the pipeline............an atmospheric expert was asked what would happen to this planet if the pipeline was approved, and he told the reporter that our planet would die (because the effects of the coal tar sands goo, its processing into oil, and the burning of that oil will be SO DIRTY it will kill our oceans and inland waters, our air , our land, all the critters on this planet -- and us).

U.S. Congress needs not any more REPUBS working for their own parties but; U.S. citizens who work for our country.
In Congress we need American citizens that apply the law and taxes on all Americans and corporations without distinction; but not only terrorize U.S. citizens of middle-class, carrying all the weight of taxes on his shoulders.

so Congress and Senate can pay for this by taking a cut in pay, they don't think $20,00 a week makes any difference so let them take a $100.00 a week cut in pay and then we can work on cutting their lunch allowance and benefits.......see how they like it!

It is no surprise that they corrupt politicians say social security is bankrupt. they have spent the trillions of dollars that was in our retirement account. I say give each one a bullet and put them out of their misery. They are so blatantly corrupt it is disgusting. This country truly needs a revolution

People who raid the social security fund now will be the first to complain when there is no money in the future. I'm sure their answer will be to tax those who earn money.
