The Senate expense scandal continues to roar; Flaherty talks with economists

OTTAWA - There could be more fireworks today as the Senate attempts to end debate on efforts to suspend Senators Pamela Wallin, Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau.

And, of course, expect the opposition parties to continue hammering away at the government over the affair during question period in the House of Commons.

The three senators deny any wrongdoing, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made clear he wants them turfed, without pay.

A vote on the bid to suspend the trio is expected by mid-week.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will get the ball rolling toward the unveiling of a fall fiscal update when he meets this morning with private sector economists.

Flaherty will speak to reporters once the meeting is over.

Expect the Parliamentary Budget Officer to call into question the Harper government's budget projections as he releases a report entitled "Economic and Fiscal Outlook Update."

As several cabinet ministers have already done, Minister of State for Democratic Reform Pierre Poilievre will spell out what the Harper government sees as the benefits of the recently announced Canada-European Union trade agreement. Poilievre will make his comments in Manotick, just south of Ottawa.

Three municipal politicians will call on Ottawa today to take action to help Canadians facing a housing crunch. The news conference will be held by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Toronto councillor Ana Bailao and Gatineau councillor Luc Montreuil.

Statistics Canada will give us an idea today just how much Canadians use the internet _ and how much we used it to buy things through e-commerce in 2012.

New Democrat MPs Jack Harris, Elaine Michaud and Nycole Turmel will take a look back to 1974, when there was a grenade explosion at CFB Valcartier in Quebec, and will talk at a news conference about the defence minister’s response to victims of that explosion.

The Media Club will hold a discussion with Joe Banks, the coordinator of the journalism program at Algonquin College. The question being ask: "Are you getting the best from your Twitter?"

And Shelly Glover _ prepare to be seduced. The Heritage Minister is expected to attend the Ottawa premier today of The Grand Seduction, with the likes of actors Gordon Pinsent and Mary Walsh.
