Yahoo Contributor Network

Yahoo! is asking Americans how September 11 changed them. Below is an account from a reader.

I will always remember where I was when I heard about the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. This is a day that will forever be remembered in American history. Being only in third grade at the time I didn't quite understand what actually happened that day.

[Your story: How has September 11 changed you?]

I was home, getting ready to go to school when I heard about the attacks through the news that my mom had turned on. I remember my mother just stood watching the news and watched the second plane fly into the South Tower. I could tell that it was bad but I didn't know what was happening it was too much for me to comprehend at that time.

Ten years later, it's still is a lot to comprehend. People hijacking planes and killing thousands of innocent people. It has taken me ten years and going to school in New York to finally wrap my mind around the fact that it wasn't just a horrible nightmare. Every year we talk about it in school and freshman year of college this year was no exception. We watched some heavy videos and really brought everyone's emotions about the event to the forefront.
