National Guacamole Day
Walk like an Egyptian, but eat like the Aztecs. Avocado seeds found in Mexico date back to 7,000 B.C. to 5,000 B.C. The Aztecs consumed avocados, sometimes mashing them with chopped tomatoes and onions, or guacamole. Guacamole is also popular with modern American households. Approximately 43 percent of U.S. households buy avocados according to the California Avocado Commission. Whip up quick or chunky guacamole to serve with your favorite tortilla chips or chicken quesadillas.
National Play-Doh Day
Celebrate patent No. 3,167,440 on Jan. 26, 1965. The product which was originally designed as a wallpaper cleaner turned into something much greater: Play-Doh. Joseph McVicker worked at Kutol Products, a company that produced soap and wallpaper cleaner. McVicker realized the "wallpaper cleaner also could be used as a pliable modeling clay" and tested it in Cincinnati-area schools, according to Ohio History Central.
McVicker and his uncle started a company to make and sell Play-Doh, the Rainbow Crafts Co. The company was bought by General Mills in 1965. Play-Doh is more pliable than modeling clay, softer than natural clay, less messy Moon Dough, and it smells like your childhood.
It's never too early to start thinking about Thanksgiving. On Sept. 16, 1620, the Mayflower and its crew departed from Plymouth, England. The ship set anchor in Provincetown, Mass., on Nov. 21, 1620, and "the Pilgrims finally landed at the site of present-day Plymouth, Mass., on Dec. 26, 1620."
