    My September 11 Silver Linings

    A Blessing in Disguise

Yahoo! is asking Americans how September 11 changed them. Below is an account from a reader.

Silver linings from September 11th? Yes, there are many. My life is far better now than I could have imagined possible. If it weren't for the events of September 11, I don't know that I would have received the blessings I have today.

[Your story: How has September 11 changed you?]

    Ten Years Ago

While getting ready for work, I turned on the morning news. Like scenes from an apocalyptic sci-fi movie, images of devastation consumed the television screen. Frozen in place, I stared open-mouthed as the destruction in New York City played out, black smoke rising from the twin Ttowers as the reporter's voice described the horrific details.

Not believing what I was seeing, I thought I had accidentally tuned in to a movie channel. Or maybe this was a modern day version of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds, playing on television rather than the radio?

When reality set in, I remembered my sister was working a trade show in New York City, and scheduled to return on Flight 93. I later learned she was OK. Some blessed delay caused her to change to a later flight. She witnessed everything from her hotel room.

For the first time in my life, I felt what it must be like to live in a war-ravaged country. I empathized with those living in countries under fire, how vulnerable they must feel as they as they go about their day, hoping it won't be their last.

But life goes on. I didn't alter my daily schedule in any way. I flew American flags in celebration of the country's strength and perseverance. A month later, I took a flight.

    Blessings From September 11th

Today, I live life to the fullest. I feel so fortunate to be alive that I have no excuse not to enjoy every moment. I've since sold most of my possessions and am traveling the country in an RV, realizing a longtime dream.

Now, I more readily tell people I love them, both family and friends. I joined a spiritual community, regularly praying and sending blessings to all people everywhere. I now have empathy and compassion for all people around the world. (Yes, even the terrorists.)

For even small kindnesses, I express my gratitude. It warmed my heart to see so many helping each other in New York, a state not previously known for a friendly nature. I've joined several volunteer organizations to give back the blessings I've received, to be part of a group helping others, to build a better connection with my community.

I've also developed a new appreciation for the men and women of our fire and police departments and our armed forces. They do something few of us could, and America is far safer for their sacrifice and protection.

Live your life to the fullest. Express love and gratitude to those around you. Volunteer. Thank firefighters, police officers, and soldiers for their service.
