Well, the previously lame fight between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia just took one big “Anchorman”-sized step up a notch with a racially-charged remark from Garcia.
The spat originated two weeks ago at The Players Championship when Garcia blamed a bad shot on the fact that Woods pulled out a golf club, which caused a ruckus from the gallery. Garcia went on to have a dreadful rest of the day and tanked out of the tournament.
Garcia called out Woods for the incident. Woods fought back by basically calling Garcia a whiner. Then Garcia said something else, then Woods had a response. Blah, blah, golf, blah, blah.
Yesterday, however, Garcia took it up a notch, saying: “We’ll have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken,” in response to a sarcastic question about the two golfers’ plans on dining together at next month’s U.S. Open.
Woods tweeted his offense taken from the remark and noted he was “confident that there is real regret that the remark was made.”
Garcia, in turn, responded to Woods’ tweets. “I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment…I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”
All along, Garcia probably should have been working on his golf game rather than working his mouth against a guy that has completely owned him on the golf course over the course of their respective careers.
This could be gold for golf television ratings, even if it reintroduces race as a hot button topic in a sport that has a controversial past with the issue.
At this point, it’s safe to assume that even golf haters would tune in if Tiger and Sergio get paired up together at the U.S. Open, just to see A) the awkwardness and B) just how badly Tiger beats Sergio into the ground. Metaphorically, of course.
