‘Shades Of Blue’ Ratings Down, ‘Life In Pieces’ Rises, ‘Madoff’ Night 2 Drops
Maybe it was the Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton debate face-off on MSNBC, but Thursday was one of those nights when almost no one on primetime among the Big 4 saw any significant upward movement in the ratings. Emphasis on the almost – because for Life In Pieces (2.3/7) it was a good night with a 15% rise among adults 18-49. That’s the best the CBS freshman comedy has done in the key demo since its September 15, 2015 debut and saw LIP tied with Thursday’s 2-hour American Idol (2.3/7), which was even with last week, for the second highest rated show of the night.
As Life In Pieces went up 15%, Shades Of Blue (1.1/4) went down 15% in the demo. Hitting a series low in early numbers, the freshman NBC Jennifer Lopez cop drama was tied for last place in its 10 PM time slot, with ABC’s Madoff After The Fall (1.2/4) special taking the top spot. While no fun, that actually might not bother NBC that much. The net is taking a longer view with Shades and emphasizing that there’s gold in that delayed viewing with its January 14 show nearly doubling its Live + Same Day rating demo result to a 2.57 in Live + 7 ratings.
Sticking with L+SD, Life In Pieces certainly got some of its lift from its powerhouse lead-in. With its first original since January 14, The Big Bang Theory (3.7/13) owned the night by a wide margin as Thursday’s highest rated show. While BBT dipped a tiny 3% in the key demo from its last original, with 15.17 million tuning in, it was also easily the most watched show of the night – as usual. Mom (1.8/6), that other Chuck Lorre show of the night, was also pretty steady with its last original of January 21. However, that’s steady in the other direction with a 6% bop up among the 18-49s. No change from last week for Angel From Hell (1.4/5) and Elementary (1.1/4).

Overall, Idol delivered Fox a Thursday win in both the 18-49 demo and in total viewers with 8.90 million watching. While securing the best 2-hour slot result for ABC since its NYE coverage, the net didn’t see its day-to-day stock rise with the second-night conclusion of its Madoff (1.0/3) miniseries. Down 17% from its Wednesday debut, the Richard Dryfuss starrer did see growth of 10% in the demo from its first to second hour. ABC was fourth among the Big 4 with a 1.1/2 – but hey, that’s up 37% from what the net got last week on a reality heavy January 28.
The earlier part of NBC’s night had You, Me and the Apocalypse (0.9/3) drop 25% from its debut of last week. Lead-out The Blacklist (1.5/5) didn’t take much of a hit from that, with just a 6% slip from its January 28 show. The CW saw DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (0.9/3) drop 18% in its third week while The 100 (0.6/2) remained even.
