Shailene Woodley, ‘Fault in Our Stars’ Dominate at MTV Movie Awards
It was all about the young up-and-comers, as well as some of the biggest blockbusters of the upcoming summer, at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, which went down on Sunday at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, hosted by Amy Schumer.
No one was off limits in Schumer’s opening monologue — her targets included Kevin Hart (“If Kevin Hart sees his shadow, we get six more Kevin Hart movies”), Hillary Clinton (“Hillary Clinton finally announced she’s taking Zayn’s spot in One Direction”) and even herself.
“I got to make my first movie this past year, ‘Trainwreck,'” she said, referring to her upcoming Judd Apatow movie. “I thought, ‘OMG, I’m starring in a movie — am I maybe, like, gorgeous?’ And then my stunt double was a guy.”
Shailene Woodley was the first big winner of the night, and it wouldn’t be the last time she took the stage. She won best female performance for her role in “The Fault in Our Stars,” and she took the opportunity to thank the author of the book the film is based on.
“I feel like this award belongs to John Green,” she said. “He gave this world a beautiful masterpiece, a gift in ‘The Fault in Our Stars.’ It changed my life when I read it and being a part of this film dramatically influenced who I am today.”
Jennifer Lopez was the next to win, taking home the prize for one of the night’s more oddball categories, best scared as s–t Performance. “Magic Mike XXL” stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Adam Rodriguez presented the award, but, much to Lopez’s chagrin, they were all wearing shirts.
On the upside, Lopez did get Tatum to twerk.
It didn’t take long for Woodley to return to the stage — the starlet went back up to accept the Trailblazer Award, presented by her “Spectacular Now” co-star Miles Teller. She called for community in her speech, remembering watching Emma Stone accept the same award three years ago.
Tatum would retake the stage soon after to accept the award for best comedic performance for his role alongside Jonah Hill in “22 Jump Street.”
“Look, it’s unfair for me to get an award for just getting to hang out with my buddy Jonah,” he admitted.
In one of several bits that aired during the show, Schumer auditioned for some of the biggest movies of the year, including “Nightcrawler” and “Into the Woods.” It’s safe to say that she didn’t quite do Meryl Streep justice.
The moment that had all comicbook fans waiting, though, was the moment Robert Downey Jr. was feted with the Generation Award by his “Avengers: Age of Ultron” co-stars. Fellow Avengers Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner assembled on stage and fell to their knees as they listened to Downey Jr.’s speech, where he expressed remorse for a troubled past.
“I partied way too much. I’ve squandered, resisted, repented,” he said.
An explosive clip from the upcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron” showed afterward, displaying a destructive battle between Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Ruffalo’s Hulk.
Zac Efron and Dave Franco won for best duo for their parts in “Neighbors” and donned their costumes from the movie to spice things up. Franco beat his brother, James Franco, who was nominated with Seth Rogen for “The Interview,” to take the award.
Woodley took the stage once again to accept the award for best kiss, though Ansel Elgort, who won the award with her, could not be there.
In what was a bit of a shocker, Bradley Cooper took the Golden Popcorn for his Oscar-nominated performance in “American Sniper,” beating Chris Pratt, Elgort, Teller and Tatum to take the prize.
Another honorary award was given to Kevin Hart, presented by Jimmy Kimmel. Given that Hart was recently the roastmaster at Comedy Central’s Roast of Justin Bieber, it’s only fair that he received some jabs himself.
“It wasn’t easy for Kevin — they said Kevin was too small to be a comedy giant,” said Kimmel. “They said he wasn’t large enough. The other comedians made fun of him. They called him names like Eddie Smurphy, Tracy Munchkin, Cedric the Enter-tiny, Bernie MacNugget.”
In the spirit of excitement for the summer’s upcoming movie slate, the ladies of “Pitch Perfect 2″ debuted an exclusive clip from the sequel, but not before one of the movie’s stars, Rebel Wilson, apologized for showing her “girl power” to the President of the United States on the set of the movie.
The fact that the final award was given to “The Fault in Our Stars” was hardly a surprise, given how many awards the teen flick had already won. Green took the stage along with the cast and took a moment to remember Esther Earl, who served as inspiration for his book.
“Esther taught me that a short life can also be a good life,” he said. “She taught me that people who are living with disability are not defined by those disabilities.”
