    Shares of Green Mountain Coffee up on upgrade

    PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.'s shares rose Friday following an analyst upgrade.

    THE SPARK: William Blair analyst Jon Andersen on Thursday upgraded his rating on Green Mountain to "Outperform" from "Market Perform," saying he believes consumers are increasingly interested in buying and using single-serve coffee makers at home.

    THE BIG PICTURE: Green Mountain was a market darling when investors saw a rapidly growing company that was leading the emerging single-serve coffee market. The shares were trading at more than twice their current value in late September.

    But the stock fell sharply over the following two months. Greenlight Capital Inc.'s David Einhorn said in October that the company's shares were overvalued. Then, in November, the company's revenue fell short of expectations as customer orders slowed. And investors remain concerned about a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry launched last year, which led to the company restating several years of earnings and remains open.

    THE ANALYSIS: Andersen said outside research indicates demand for single-serve coffee is growing, and Green Mountain seems to be addressing its accounting and regulatory issues more effectively. The company's stock, Anderson wrote, appears to be fairly priced given the company's earnings potential.

    SHARE ACTION: Andersen's upgrade gave shares a boost Thursday but they dipped late in the day and ended trading down 8 cents at $53.92.

    Eager investors came back Friday, however, and sent Green Mountain stock up $1.45, or 2.7 percent, to $55.37 by early afternoon. The shares have traded between $31.21 and $115.98 in the past 52 weeks.
