    Shatterbox Announces New Hires for Design, Client Acquisitions

    Branding and New Media design firm adds pair to staff

    Shatterbox has already begun to expand its staff, less than a month after the Lexington-based branding and new media design firm’s merger with regional IT power Hensley, Elam and Associates was announced.

    Shatterbox CEO Russ Hensley said J. Mike Taylor and Scott Hamilton have been tabbed to fill the first of the 15 new jobs the company expects to create during the next two years. Taylor will serve as Director of New Media, while Hamilton will oversee Client Acquisitions. The pair will work out of Shatterbox’s offices on 163 East Main Street in Lexington, KY.

    “We’re happy to have energetic, talented people such Mike and Scott serve as the cornerstone for Shatterbox,” Hensley said. “Not only do they bring unique skill sets to the company, they also share in our vision of what Shatterbox can mean to Lexington and all of Kentucky, as well as the impact it can have on both the IT and design industries, in general.”

    Taylor joins Shatterbox after spending the past 10 years specializing in new media design and development for sister company Hensley-Elam. Taylor, a native of London, Ky., and a University of Kentucky graduate, will focus on advanced website design, a philosophy described as “the fusion of form and functionality.” The basis of this theory is to integrate a robust, front-end interface for a website with a stunning and elegant design. This theory is grounded in the idea a project will not be successful unless it is fully developed both visually and mechanically, enabling Shatterbox to create well-rounded projects for its customers.

    Hamilton comes to Shatterbox after a 12-year journalism career followed by a one-year stint as senior sales executive for the Lexington Legends Class-A Minor League Baseball team. A native of Matewan, WV, and a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, he covered college basketball and football for six years before becoming the golf writer for the SportsBusiness Journal, a sister publication of the Sporting News. In 2006 he accepted a position as Senior Writer for Golfweek magazine, the world’s largest weekly golf publication. The focus of his duties at Shatterbox will be the identification and recruitment of new partners, both in Kentucky as well as across the United States, while also coordinating Shatterbox and Hensley-Elam’s public relations initiatives.

    Shatterbox was founded in Lexington by Jeff Ruth, who still steers the company’s day-to-day operations as Chief Creative Officer. Among Shatterbox’s current clients are Gray Construction, the University of Kentucky and Fazoli’s Restaurants, while it has also done work with the United States Olympic Committee and Kentucky Historical Society. Ruth has personally won more than 40 local Gold Addy Awards since 2002, has had work published internationally has recently won multiple national awards.

    "It's exciting to see the company already gaining strong ground since we announced the merger,” Ruth said. “There's strong faith in our company both internally and externally and this growth is a good sign of the trust in what Shatterbox will become. I look forward to further expansion as we continue our search for top talent who share our vision."

    Hensley-Elam is a regional IT company that offers Web hosting, website development, computer programming, network management and off-site backup as well as consultation from its software engineering and infrastructure services group. Hensley finalized a deal in late spring to acquire controlling interest of Shatterbox, making it the company’s third significant move in a year, as it followed the acquisitions of IT services providers The Computer Place, of London, Ky., and Lexington-based Voltaic Commerce.

    The absorption of Shatterbox pairs Hensley-Elam’s resources as one of the region’s leading IT services firms with Shatterbox’s creative and branding talents to form a unique company capable of enhancing clients’ productivity along with its exposure and marketing initiatives.
