Shell fighting oil leak in North Sea

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Friday it is trying to stop oil leaking from a flow line at one of its drilling platforms in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.

Spokesman David Williams confirmed the leak was ongoing late Friday, but would not provide details beyond a company statement.

Shell said it cannot specify how much oil may have escaped, but it knows which line leaked and said the flow has been stemmed as the underwater well has been shut in and the line at the Gannet Alpha platform is being de-pressurized.

Gannet is 110 miles (180 kilometers) east of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Shell said it has a remote-controlled vehicle searching for the leak. Meanwhile, a plane is monitoring the surface, and a vessel with cleanup equipment is at the spot.

A spokesman for the U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change said his agency is responding to the incident and will investigate. The agency understands "from Shell that there is a finite amount of oil that can be released," the spokesman added. He did not give his name in accordance with government policy.

well if Shell said it was only a finite amount of oil that leaked then we can rest easy knowing they told us the truth.

Clearly it was the truth. Because, if an infinite amount leaked then it would be chin deep on Mars and still rising.

I trust the oil companies... They have good intentions... HAVEN'T YOU SEEN THEIR NICE COMERCIALS?!

I know right? Those commercials make me sick!

They are the most fabricated , B/s I have ever seen. And I work in the industry.

Your spelling is atrocious. It should be conmercial, not comercial.

each of us should go out to the garage or driveway and count how many machines we own that need oil and gas.

3 vehicles. 2 that used 90% gas and 1 that burns 100% biodiesel which I use for at least 3/4 of the miles I drive each year.

We know how precious oil is to our daily life. Now there is African famine; there is a lack of water to drink and to grow vegetation. Wouldn't it be miraculous if there would be a pipeline of water supplying for them? All is needed is money...
      • E 9 mths ago
Twilight zone. "all they need is money".. if they got the money, someone would steal it anyway.
      • cocheta 9 mths ago
Where would you divert the water from?

The cost of this cleanup, like all the others, will be passed on to the consumer.

You wrote- "The cost of this cleanup, like all the others, will be passed on to the consumer."
        -----------------
Well jeez! You don't expect the cost to come out of their hundreds of billions of dollars in profits upon which they pay no taxes on even, do you????

While the American can't even take a standard decuction for medical supplys. I read BP will take a $9.9 billion dollar deduction for the oil spill they caused.

Don't worry. The earth will heal itself after us humans are gone.
    • Christian  •  9 mths ago
No problem, we know from experience that spilled oil just disappears like magic!

Lies, cover-ups, and more lies-oil companies are just like governments and politicians...

Why can't we just work towards alternative energy? Why does just asking for that inspire others to go on rants calling that simple belief idiotic and moronic. Nobody said drop oil, we can't. But the sooner we heat our homes with solar the better we will be. The sooner we power our televisions with wind the better we will be. The sooner we power our refrigerators with tidal the better we will be. That is all, plain and simple. Believe the oil companies don't need your help, they're doing ok. If they need any help defending themselves.... they always have Congress for that.

I'm for drilling and use to work offshore... I'm starting to think man will kill everything in the sea the way we are going. China has had a lot of big spills offshore that people never hear of..China is drilling in the Gulf Of mexico.. BP last year messed up for sure.. Company that lease's the rig has full control over everything.. The blow out proventer's should have been tested both by Rig Owner and Rig Leaser.. The oceans will not stand for this stuff it it keeps up. PBR in Brazil is drilling very deep water wells and look out down there because it will be bad when something happens...

I can't believe so many people still shout Liberal or Conservative. Don't you idiots know that your world is being polluted almost beyond repair, and all you can say is liberal's fault or conservatives fault. Meanwhile these polluting companies are siting back enjoying the game of political ping-pong that we find ourselves playing. ENOUGH OF THIS SHITZ!

Hey!!! I guess none of you have heard about EXXON-MOBIL'S screw up near or on Yellowstone National Park. The goverment is trying to keep it a secret because it's on natioal land and Exxon is buying it's way into secrecy. I have a friend of mine that has been working working up there in Montana for two months now and the oil is headed down a pristine river killing everything in it's path. I guess we can be bought over and over again!! Check it OUT!

Here we go again. I am from Oil City, Pa. where oil was first successfully drilled. Over the years, all we have seen is oil companies grow and prosper to all disreguard to our natures environment. They don't have a voice and all the oil companies are greedy and seeking profit at all cost. They know its a commodity that we have to have, in a sense and they take advantage of that. When is the last time you heard of an Oil Co. asking for a bail out? we are ruining our enviorment for money and greed.

The nations/corporations of the world should dedicate more time and money towards developing safer offshore oil drilling and oil leak detection/cut-off systems. This technology has been neglected and I believe most offshore drilling is conducted with old and antiquated equipment right now. If this new oil drilling safety equipment is patented and it could be sold worldwide making nations/corporations billions of dollars selling and servicing this equipment to nations which drill for oil and natural gas offshore.
