Signal - Private Messenger review

Signal - Private Messenger keeps your phone calls secure. If you're worried about the security of your telephone conversations, this app can encrypt and protect your voice calls, requiring only your existing phone number, making it very easy to use.

Pros

Uses your original number: Signal - Private Messenger works with existing phone numbers, which means that if you want to use the dial pad, you can call your contacts at their regular phone number, and the call will be encrypted.

Good quality: No noticeable audio quality loss can be detected in an encrypted phone call.

Easy invitation: If your friends haven't picked up Signal yet, you can easily invite them from within the app. After dialing someone's number into the dial pad, the app shows you whether or not that person is already using the service. If they are not, the app offers to send them an SMS message inviting them to install it.

Cons

Address book bug: Under the "contacts" tab, only two contacts appear out of hundreds. According to the support website, this is an acknowledged bug that will be fixed in a future release.

Two-way encryption: The only way to make an encrypted call with this app is to ensure that both callers are using the service. If you try to call someone who is not using the service, your only option is to invite them to use it, or else cancel the call.

Bottom Line

If you have contacts in your list that want to have encrypted conversations with you, Signal - Private Messenger is a fine service to use. It allows you to easily invite your friends and does not affect the quality of your phone calls.
