Silicon Valley Workers Now Earn $104,000 on Average

Bubble or not, tech employees in Silicon Valley seems to be doing pretty well. "Tech-jobs website operator Dice Holdings Inc. said salaries for software and other engineering professionals in California's Silicon Valley rose 5.2% to an average $104,195 last year, outstripping the average 2% increase, to $81,327, in tech-workers' salaries nationwide," according to The Wall Street Journal. The paper cites the hiring spree among both the Valley's start-ups and established firms as driving up salaries. This is the first time that average has broken the six-figure mark, and -- with that 5.2 increase -- is notably much better than what that other high-earning geographic metonym -- Wall Street -- is feeling now. Last Thursday's "bloodbath" of a Bonus Day saw bankers' compensations at places like Goldman Sachs take a hit, though admittedly they're still doing pretty well. And of course Wall Street is helping at least one big Silicon Valley firm, Facebook, go public this year so that both companies' employees earn even more in 2012.

Thanks for the information. I am totally depressed. After 32 years of teaching, never made more than $52,000 !!!

Wages are very good in that area, but the cost of living is very high also. That's why many Silicon Valley workers drive across the mountain range into a valley east of those mountains where homes are much less expensive. Of course, it's a 90 to 120-minute drive one way to many high-tech companies from there.

For how much is a house worth in San Jose (Ca), I can find a job there that tripple my salary to where I am now and still not worth it.

They still cannot afford the expensive housing there!

It's about time that our educational institution should fast track its shift to computer related courses where America is the world leaders and expected to be for the next decade.

That $23,000 difference doesn't even come close to making up the difference in cost of living. I'm glad I can be an engineer without being forced to live there.

Thats nice, we now make $14,500 (average) in Michigan because our government let the country's manufacturing base to be exported, and So-called Americans bought foreign made vehicles

Also hit that SV average this past year. Yes monthly rent is expensive but energy bills are pretty low. For winter my PG%E bill is between 45 and 75 dollars. If you are coming from where the energy bill is 300-500 a month there's some of that rental difference.

And most of the tech jobs are filled by imported Indians and Chinese.
      • unforgivable 4 mths ago
You mean the ones that aren't filled by hard working Americans, yes that is correct. That is what makes America great; we welcome smart and hard working people here, as opposed to China where nobody would want to immigrate to.

The Chinese and the Indians bring with them money and intelligence. The Mexicans bring with them kidds and drugs. I live in Cupertino Ca. I'll take all the Chinese and Indians over one Mexican. O and I'm A Mexican.

software engineering and computer science are highly skilled fields. and its an open market. If the demand is there, and not enough whites with the qualifications, then the demand will be filled by others. This is just economics. if you don't like it, work your #$%$ off, get a computer science degree from a reputed university and you can get your $100K job. What's the point in getting envious of others who have better education and skills than you?
