Singapore narrowly elects Tony Tan as president

SINGAPORE (AP) — Former Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan won a narrow victory to become the country's seventh president, officials said Sunday, a sign that the popularity of the Southeast Asian city-state's ruling party is eroding.

The 71-year-old Tan received 35 percent of about 2.1 million votes in Saturday's election, edging former member of parliament Tan Cheng Bock by just 7,269 ballots, Elections Department chief Yam Ah Mee said early Sunday. Tan Jee Say earned 25 percent of the vote, while Tan Kin Lian got 5 percent.

The announcement of the results was delayed by a few hours as election officials recounted the votes because of the tight contest between the top two candidates.

The election was Singapore's first contested vote for president — mainly a ceremonial position in the country's parliamentary government — since 1993.

"I plan to work my utmost for Singaporeans whatever be their political affiliation," Tan said after the results were announced. "The presidency is above politics."

Analysts were closely watching the performance of Tony Tan, who was backed by most of the political establishment, as a barometer of voter discontent with the ruling People's Action Party, which has held power since 1959.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the PAP did not officially endorse Tan, but Lee praised Tan last month and didn't mention any of the other three candidates. Until last month, Tan was executive director of sovereign wealth fund Government of Singapore Investment Corp. and chairman of media company Singapore Press Holdings.

In May, the PAP's vote total in parliamentary elections fell to 60 percent — its lowest since Singapore split from Malaysia in 1965 — amid a backlash against soaring housing prices, a surge in foreign workers and rising income inequality.

The PAP maintains a large majority in parliament, with 81 of 87 seats. But its grip on power — once so complete that it controlled every parliament seat and PAP candidates won most districts unopposed — appears to be slipping.

"The overwhelming majority of the voters didn't vote for the government-sponsored candidate," said Tan Jee Say, who lost a bid for a parliament seat in May representing the opposition Singapore Democratic Party. "More than 60 percent wanted some checks and balances."

Singapore's constitution allows the president to veto the use of the country's reserves and some public office appointments, but doesn't give the post any executive authority.

Tan Cheng Bock was a PAP member of parliament from 1980 to 2006, but said during the campaign that he would put the interests of the country above those of the party and speak out if the government makes a mistake.

"I'm not a proxy to any political party. I'm not a proxy to the PAP," he said early Sunday before the results were announced. "I'm the one who can unify all Singaporeans."

Outgoing President S.R. Nathan, who won two six-year terms unopposed, consulted with the prime minister and Cabinet in private but avoided public comment on government policy. Tony Tan and government spokesmen sought in recent weeks to quell calls for an expanded role for the president.

Tan will take office Sept. 1.

35% winner oh that make 65% who voted against him.. How sad is that... i used to get whacked for border line passing.. Maybe next time round he will score better with the people. :)

Respect democracy the people have spoken. If you think the election unfair then fight for it. If you think more people should have voted then promote it. Democracy is yours if you can keep it as benjamin franklin said.

The president salary of $4,000,000.00 a year was an issue. But no politician, except TJS, was willing to talk about reducing it. I appreciate him for this.

I don't think TT is happy with the result. Just imagine, he has the machinery behind him, the unions, PA, etc., and still garnered 35% of the total votes??? Which 1st country has an elected President winning an election with 35% of the votes? Strange, eh!
      • Shu-Ney 9 mths ago
I think he is happy, Ray. Winning means hapiness. Loser always have something to say. Respect the outcome and save yourself from misery. Have a good life!

I'm a Senior Citizen (62-year old) who had initially wanted to vote for Dr Tony Tan (for obvious reasons) before the various institutions publicly endorsed him as a Presidental Election Candidate to be supported. I and several of my relatives switched our votes to Dr Tan Cheng Bok after these institutions made this "unfair" publicised support to TT ; they should be neutral, especially Mr Lim Swee Say (a Minister from PMO). I'm sure many other voters did the same like me, otherwise TT would have won by a bigger margin!

This is definitely a constructive feedback! Hope to hear more! Thank you, Soo!

Like Soo, me and my group of friends were similarly planning to give our votes to TT, but we got so sick of all the endorsements for TT during the period prior to polling day that we have a change of mind and switch our votes to TCB. I believe there were others who felt the same. Why politicized and abused the election process in this instance. If someone must win, let it be won fair and square to earn honour, respect and a true mandate from Singaporeans. Perhaps TT could have won in a more honourable manner and a more respectable count of votes.

We all knew it will be kelong if TT won... disappointed... yes, amazed... NO!!
    • Benjamin  •  9 mths ago
TCB should have won. Only if Kin Lian back out earlier...
      • joe 9 mths ago
Yeah! if only TKL and TJS did not stand for the PE, one on one between TT and TCB, the latter would definitely gallop away to win in a canter.

MANY OF TONY TAN VOTES ARE FORCED VOTES, THOSE WORKING IN GOVT SECTOR ARE TOLD TO VOTE HIM. THEY VOTED OUT OF FEAR, NOT WILLINGLY. SHAMELESS

PROVE YOUR POINT. Where is your proof. If u sing song talk co*k, sing to ur partner.

        @ Alpha

Wow, they voted out of fear & you want proof. You are like asking loansharks to go police station with you when you can't pay your debt.

Everyone who served NS know about 'white horse' soldiers. Everyone know that TT's son & PM's son never serve NS. Defer again and again. But did you see any general give you proof? I guess you are one of the 'white horse' too.

I'd love to see a US president named Tony Tan. But not a Chinese guy but like a Brooklyn gu|do who is really tanned and whose nickname is Tony Tan. You know?

Now the time to suffer, prices will increase, reserve are at stick, more fake talent, mass import of foreign resident and paid them to integrate into SG socielty to ensure they win in GE 2016 and presidency.

Help us Obiwan, you are our only hope

TT, do you think you have won??....I don't think so. 64.81% of the Singaporean didn't give you the mandate. I think our election system should be re-look into. How can someone with only 35.19% votes became a President when remaining 64.81% who has voted against him. To be appointed at the highest office, I think at least must have 50% of votes or otherwise is not a mandate from all Singaporean. TT must now work extra miles to convince the remaining 64.18% of the voters that you are worth the 4 million tax payer money.

With a position as important as the President of SIngapore, it may be a good idea to review future election process such that in a cases where we have 3 or 4 or more candidates, it may be better and more reflective of electors wishes if there can be a way to voters to have a 2nd round vote between the final 2 candidates to ensure for a proper majority representation.
      • joe 9 mths ago
This is definitely a brilliant suggestion. Hope the authority is willing to look into this.

I don't understand why our government didn't do how Japan did...
Any common sense people would know, if the % between the top two is so marginal in winning-tie, there should have been a re-voting process for the top Two so that whoever who finally surfaced out as the winner would not have such a hard time now.
Why?? The government don't like the idea of declaring another holiday for local citizens is it??

Contrary to perception of a severe split in the Singaporean Voters, I am of the opinion that the Presidential Voting augurs well for Singapore Politics. Tony Tan represents Consultative Politics, Dr Tan CB, representative politics, between them we see almost 70% of Singaporeans who are either realists or idealists. The "dreamers" represented by Tan Kin Lian and the "self-interest" group represented by Tan Jee Say, collectively 30%...the traditional anti-PAP voters. A country with 60-70% of voters who are thinking voters, we are okay.

Patrick is married to an Ang Mo and so is his daughter. With 2 ang mos in the family, I wonder what their though process would be and that of their parents for having a President with 35% of the votes.

The US avoids it by having the primaries and the electoral college albeit they did have minority Presidents in the past but a few points off 50%. Many countries have similar mechanisms such as runs-offs to ensure that a mandate is indeed a mandate of the people. The Westminster system avoids it by having party caucus or the like to elect the leader.

For such a super smart country, how did a man with only 35% of the popular vote end up as the President.

This is a measure of things to come. It is plainly evident that if we continue to be separated in our views and our support, we will not change Singapore. Remember the saying 'united we stand, divided we fall'. What is done is done, no point crying over spilt milk. What the opposition parties must now do is look at ways and means to consolidate your mandates, your people and your parties. Only if this can be accomplished with a solid leader at the helm with one common belief and goal, that can garner the backing of all the opposition members, will we stand a chance to make a change in the government. WP, SDP, SPP and everyone else, you have 4 years and counting to come together and combine your best talents and leaders. If things remain as they are now, we will continue to dilute the votes come 2016 and the PAP will remain in power. We need 1 maybe 2 strong and qualified opposition parties that can bring the fight to the incumbent govt. C'mon guys, the time is right for the picking. They are continually putting their foots in their mouths and pushing forward policies that are turning the middle ground and fence sitters to the opposition. It just wont make a difference if we stand and face them divided.

I think if TT is not in anyway connected to the "WHITES" he might have won this battle beautifully....lets hope he'll be able to do something instead of just waving his aged hands to the public

TT with 35+ % vote is not the peoples' President and 65+% of the citizen have to contribute his 4 million annually is madness.

      The result speaks for itself.

Most sporean really dont want TJS and TKL as President. They have less 30% of votes from pple of spore. Worst, TKL only gotten less than 5%.

Regardless past linkages with PAP, pple stil want a strong and competent individual as President. Through the campaign, 4 candiates represented themselves well, but the obvious 2 failed to deliver and manifest their knowledge and intellect with regards to issue on regional and gobal standings, which is critical for a President. Theses may have cost some of their votes.

PE is not only just for pple in spore. It has also the representation of spore to world there. Many sense that TJS or TKL should not be the chosen face to rep the nation.

Let's see for the coming 6 yrs, how TT can breach the gap between pple and govt.

Still dun understand why have singaporean voted for TT, ever since they have increase so many thing. Still dun understand, singaporea fate is seal, hope before 2016 come, we are still in one piece
    • What do you know  •  9 mths ago
TT is not singaporean elected president but PAP elected president. We need to have a revote between TT and TCB to be fair. From the revote we will then see a much better view of who is the real winner that real Singaporean select.
