Sisters' Spat Is No Reason To Ruin Husband's Reunion

DEAR ABBY: My wife, "Kate," and her sister, "Judy," do not get along, to the point that my wife refuses to be in the same room with her. I have a class reunion coming up, and Judy is in my class.

Because we're not sure Judy will show up, Kate has said she will attend -- but she'll leave if Judy arrives. We had planned on going in separate cars so Kate could escape if necessary. But now she says if Judy puts in an appearance, she'll be upset with me if I don't leave with her.

I don't get along with Judy either, but I'd like the chance to catch up with other classmates. Kate feels my not leaving with her would demonstrate a lack of support. I don't want my wife's antipathy toward her sister to cause me to be penalized. What to do? -- IN THE MIDDLE

DEAR IN: Remind your wife that it's your reunion, not hers. Tell her you plan to go and catch up with your former classmates, and if she'd like to accompany you, you would love to have her at your side. If Judy shows up, it will be two against one. But if seeing Judy would be too upsetting for her, you'll understand if she decides to stay home. It's her choice.

DEAR ABBY: I'm a mature woman who has been seeing a gentleman for five months. We have dinner together, go dancing, watch movies, have game nights with friends, etc. We are together at least four nights a week, and each night it ends the same way. We sit close, hold hands for almost an hour, kiss for several minutes, hug, and then go our separate ways. I'm ready for more.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not looking for marriage. But along with really enjoying his company, I'm very physically attracted to him. We're both kind of shy.

Can you suggest any non-threatening way to bring up the subject of becoming more intimate? Or should I continue to just wait for him to make a move? -- STUCK AT FIRST BASE IN CALIFORNIA

DEAR STUCK AT FIRST BASE: I assume that the gentleman you're seeing is also "mature." Has it occurred to you that he may no longer be able to perform in that department? And if not, how will that affect you?

The time is right to broach the subject of what's missing. A way to go about it would be to tell him you care about him and ask him if you are attractive to him -- and if the answer is yes, follow up by asking why he has been hesitant to take your relationship any further. Then listen.

DEAR ABBY: How do you curb a sweet tooth? I sometimes wake up with the urge to eat sweets at night. This is a big weakness of mine. -- NEEDS TO CURB THE CRAVING

DEAR NEEDS: I'm glad you asked, because it gives me a chance to share a technique that works for me. When you have a sweets craving, get up and go brush your teeth! When you're done, the craving will be less.

Nothing like a reunion to bring out the inner high schooler in people.

Gah, letter 1 is so weird. I could not imagine doing that to my husband. I'd either tell him to go and have a fabulous time, or if he REALLY wanted me there, do my best to mentally blot out the offending person. Stuff like that just trips me out. Why punish your sweetie for your own problems?
      • Colleen Marie Briggs 3 mths ago
yeah, I bet the holidays are fun around their house.... and weddings... and funerals.... and

LW1 - Why are you even writing about this? Go the reunion alone and please turn in your testicles. Since you’re not using them my cat, Lenny would like them. He misses his.

        Ha!

Generally, events like reunions are so chock-full of people that it's difficult to visit with those whom you WANT to visit with. No worries about having the two sisters getting into a spat, unless the class was tiny. Kind of immature, if you ask me. I don't like my sister either, but I'd never let that get in the way of having a good time with my husband and his friends.
      • Big Daddy 3 mths ago
        KIND OF immature? Try enormously.
      • Big Daddy 3 mths ago
Wrong! People like this will go out of their way to have a confrontation, then each will blame the other for starting it. This type thrives on drama and seeks it out whenever possible.

LW3: OK folks, a quick physiology lesson here, take notes, there will be a quiz. Here's how your body metabolizes sugar: 1) You consume a large quantity of candy, pastry, whatever. 2) Your blood sugar level rises as the sugar is absorbed 3) Your insulin level increases shortly thereafter in response to the elevated sugar level 4) Your cells metabolize sugar at a higher rate under the stimulus of the insulin 5) Your blood sugar level drops as the sugar is metabolized 6) Now the interesting part - for a short period (usually just a few hours), your blood sugar is low but your insulin level is high. This causes sugar cravings! So you consume a large quantity of... (back to step one, and repeat as unnecessary).

The only long term solution is to break the cycle. If you can muster the willpower to avoid sweets for 7 - 10 days, your cravings will go away. In fact, they will be greatly reduced by the fourth day. After that you can occasionally (once every two weeks or so) enjoy a small portion of sweets without causing cravings. And they taste better because A: your palate is not desensitized and B: you're not guilty because you know you're practicing moderation.

This is a simplified version, there are plenty of non-commercial websites that will explain this in greater depth. NEVER take dieting advice from a website that is tying to sell you something! Thank you for your time. Next week: Fiber - Your Unappreciated Friend. (Really, I could write five paragraphs on it, easily...)

        Thanks Dr. Big Daddy!
I am up on science and biology, but think many are not. I also watch Dr. Oz, so learn new cool things about how our bodies work on a daily basis.
I am dumbfounded by some of the things people tell me that shows how clueless they are.
I have a overweight friend who starves herself to lose weight, skipping breakfast, barely eating all day, only to pig out at night because she's so hungry. At 49, she should know better.
Another acquaintance recently told me she gargles and brushes here teeth with a bathroom cleaner with bleach once a week because she's sure it not only whitens her teeth but keeps her from getting sick. I told her it was poison and she told me, yes, it's killing the germs!
        argh

The only thing is if your body doesn't produce the insulin it needs to metabolize the sugars, then your are diabetic and need insulin.
      • Big Daddy 3 mths ago
IJM - I personally believe everybody should get at least two terms of biology and anatomy/physiology, with an emphasis on the information that applies to everyday life: metabolism, first aid, sleep habits - the list is long. It's the operator's manual for the human body.

Mindy, my little lecture does assume a healthy individual - the disclaimers alone would have doubled the length.

Man in the middle. This is what you do. Go early to your reuinion. Right as the doors openning. As people walk in make conversion with your classmates. Introduce your wife like the Queen she is. Display how well you & your better half are doing, but keep it real. What your doing is working the room. This way by the time Judy gets there, & she desides to catch an attitude she will look like the evil one. If anyone notices & ask, whats wrong with her? just say, she forgot her medication. Your wife must remain strong to defuse the situation. By leaving you are making Judy more stronger. Good Luck.

What is it with controlling women lately? Last night we had the backseat cook and tonight we have a wife and her sister who are making THEIR problem the husband's problem and in public too, as well as the wife telling her husband he has to leave with her, etc. We don 't know what the issue is between the sisters but that doesn't give them the right to turn any public venue they want to into the OK Corral. Where in there is any consideration from Kate for her husband? HE is not allowed to go to a social event without having to dodge the bullets from Kate and Judy, or he must leave when Kate wishes it? Abby nailed this one, the husband should go, ignore Judy if he sees her, and Kate can come if she can act like a responsible adult, or stay home.

As for the LW with the romance problem, I do not understand why they can't just talk about it.. I don't get how people can want sex but not want to or not have the courage to even talk about it, to the point of writing Abby. I would suggest a little more "maturing." You're not twelve. Open your mouth and talk about your feelings and desires.
      • Chris 3 mths ago
"you're not twelve" haha good one but yes, so true. If you can't talk about it you shouldn't be doing it!
      • Boss Mare 3 mths ago
" If you can't talk about it you shouldn't be doing it!.." #$%$ skippy!
      • susannah 3 mths ago
Exactly right! It is too weird though that this seems to be something that alot of people don't do. I sure don't get it. They can do any physical thing but they can't talk about it? People do really need to grow up.

LW#1 - Abby has it right. It's YOUR reunion. How would she like it if you forced her to leave something that her friends are at because someone you hated was there?!? I say good call for her if she wants to bail to try and prevent a scene, bad call forcing you to leave too.
    • is what it is  •  3 mths ago
#1: Your wife reminds me of my aunt. If she was mad at someone, she expected the whole family to be mad at them. And if they werent, they were on her hit list too. She ended up secluded in her home with only her husband, who tried to have his own opinion early on, but quickly realized if he wanted to remain happily married, he would side with her. He was miserable with her right up until the day she died. Keeping her happy and satisfied was not only a full time job, he sacraficed his relationship with his son and grandkids. There is nothing wrong with going to your reunion, and if your wife wants to STAND BY YOUR SIDE, she is welcome. I'm sure its a big room, and she can avoid her sister. and if she cant, then maybe its time to make peace with her.
    • Auntie Social  •  3 mths ago
LW1: Does anyone else think that reunions are fun for the alumni, but not for the spouses? He should say that rather than risk her having an upsetting evening, he will just go without her. There's no reason for him not to go, though, or to have to leave in the middle because his wife is upset. He could say "rather than letting Judy ruin things for you, I think you should just skip the reunion". The evening is about HIM: not his wife, not his sister, not their drama.

Frequently an event is more for one spouse than another: you should just go graciously, and have as good a time as you can have--then he'll do the same for you one day. I REALLY don't like that she's made all this about her. Willing to bet she hasn't said "Oh, good, honey, you can see your old football buddies" or anything about what he'd like.
    • NyukNyukNyuk  •  3 mths ago
LW1: "Kate feels my not leaving with her would demonstrate a lack of support."
It seems to me that supporting her possible decision to ditch you IS showing support. She needs to hear that.
    • Killer B  •  3 mths ago
L1: Go to the reunion and if Judy shows up, just ignore her.
L2: Next time when you kiss, reach over and fondle his junk.
L3: The only thing I can't resist is temptation.
L4: I also can't resist cheese, so I guess there are two things.
    • bogbean  •  3 mths ago
LW2, while you're kissing, reach out and touch it. This is a clear signal men of any age understand. ;-)

L3 - I agree with Abby. Brush your teeth, but only AFTER you eat a candy bar.
    • Netcord  •  3 mths ago
Please people, listen carefully. Drinking antifreeze is extremely dangerous. And is more often than not, FATAL. Fatal meaning that it will kill you. This is no joke. Do not listen to what Diapey said to do. That is very, very bad advise. He may have meant it as a joke, but that's nothing to joke about.Diapey does not realize (being the #$%$ that he is) that some people do not know the danger of drinking antifreeze, and that it may not be common knowledge to all. This is serious, people. DO NOT DRINK ANTIFREEZE.

#1- Leave your wife at home, she's not mature enough for adult parties. Ignore your s-i-l, you don't like her anyway. You will be in the company of other sociable people, have the time of your life...drama free.
    • Rockytop  •  3 mths ago
Lw 3 - Don't smoke that last bowl right before bed. Give yourself some time to eat a healthy snack before you retire ;)
    • broncosgodess  •  La Porte, Indiana  •  3 mths ago
LW#1 remind your wife that your are going to a high school reunion, not back to actual high school, and she needs to grow the hell up.
    • new ol'lady  •  3 mths ago
Craving a high-sugar snack in the middle of the night means your blood sugar is out of whack. Around 7 PM, have a little buttermilk (soured milk product) and a couple bites of chicken meat, and then brush your teeth. This will serve to regulate your blood sugar. You can also add L-Glutamine or L-Glutathione powder to your last water of the evening. Both amino acids regulate blood sugar. I use these methods because I am a reactive hypoglycemic. They work.
