What a Skirmish with Iran Might Do to World's Oil Supplies

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

November has ended and December has begun with concern over increasing difficulties with Iran. More sanctions by the EU and the U.S. in response to Iran's nuclear aspirations led to the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as reported by Time. In addition, there is ongoing posturing between the Islamic Republic and Israel. But beyond the fear of the potential for violence against Iran's Western World adversaries and the country's nuclear program, there is a fear of what escalating tensions with Iran could do to the world's oil supplies and prices.

How much of the world's oil comes from Iran?

According to a report by Reuters, Iran supplies about 2.5% of the world's oil - about 300 million barrels a day. China is the largest importer of Iranian crude oil, with shipments of 547,000 barrels a day. Turkey and India also get a lot of their oil from Iran. Crude exports from Iran were exceeded last year only by Saudi Arabia and Russia, Bloomberg reported.

How is Iran's oil supply at risk?

Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic transport route for oil supplies coming out of the region, if the United States or Israel were to attack it, Reuters reported in early November. Approximately 40 percent of the world's oil passes through that strait. With the European Union, who currently receives a fifth of Iran's oil exports, plotting an all-out boycott of imports from Iran and the possibility of military action against the country by Israel, former White House energy advisor Bob McNally says oil prices could surge to $175 a barrel if Iran retaliates by closing the Strait of Hormuz.

When would the prices begin to rise?

Prices have already begun to rise. According to U.S. News & World Report, talks of European embargoes have caused countries to look to places like Russia in order to keep up with the oil imports they need. Already the price of Russian crude oil has risen. According to Bloomberg, several places are still reeling from price increases this past April that arose from a lesser supply of exports from Libya during its conflict.

    What can be done?

Not much can be done to prevent the rise in the price of oil in response to the rising tide of concerns about Iran. For now, countries are simply making sure they can still obtain enough oil. While a growing list of countries are announcing sanctions against Iran, they're also scrambling for backup options if the situation in the region continues to degrade. China's Foreign Ministry is asking Iranian crude oil importers to review contingency plans if those oil shipments from Iran stop coming, Reuters' December 1 article reported, and India refiners are also looking for a plan B. Spain and Greece have also been forced to look at alternative resources as other European countries poise for a ban, an article from AFP stated.

The world is expecting a war with Iran, and are looking for other ways to get crude before the battle starts. Everyone knows it is not a metter if it happens, it's a matter of when it happens. Iran will put up more of a fight than Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya combined, and the world is counting on Russian oil to tde them over, but Russia is on Iran's side, so this may not be a reliable source to count on. The price of oil going to $175 per barrel may actually be a bargain if Russia holds up on shipping oil to help defend Iran. Oil could go to $300 a barrel, if it can even be had at all.

Iran wont be all of them combined. their air defense is less than what Iraq and Afganistan had. The only thing Iran does have is a big mouth to make themselves look imposing to everyone. They cannot keep the strait closed if they are able to close it at all. The world wouldnt permit that to happen. But your $300 a barrel estimate may be a tad low unfortunately

Once you said Iranian air defenses are less that what Iraq and Afghanistan had I knew you were either ignorant and oblivious to the facts or lying. Either way at that point I knew I didn't need to read any further on. Your post is wishful thinking at its finest.

sooooo why would gas in the US go up so much if we get so little from Iran? o wait corrupt politicians
      • TeddA 5 mths ago
        Negative.

Simple supply and demand. Less oil in the global "pool" affects the oil supply schedule.

Basic economics. Largely independent of poilitics.

@TeddA:you are naive wich is a mild term for stupid.Nobody but you can separate the politic from economic.A strong political will can generate devastating economical outcome or positive one, depending on intereses. This two termes are totaly and inseparable interlaced!
      • wrdsmth 5 mths ago
markus, you need to read some more before you assign things to your single political point of view. supply/demand, politics, speculators, HFT, personalities: all have inputs to the price but scarcity is a really big part of the equation.

Should the conflict will to start over Iran, these are the people who stand to profit greatly:-

      1) The oil traders
      2) The arms manufacturers aka the Merchants of Death
      3) Their supporters & backers, the politicians who stand to pocket the cuts.

The people of iran proffits. because the traitors in government rebuild the cities they destroy, and promace a strong economy. THey proffit, we pay. Kind of like becomming a Jahovas witness, you hit all the breaks, guaranteed blessing of live untill you finally hit the stop button

Iran to the USA is like libya. Any noticable price increase, can be considered price gouging because they both combined supply less than 1 percent of the us supply. A price increase over 3 cents, is illegal proffiteering.

See people, they made us some promaces when they did some financing of Big Oil just after mid century in the 1900s. THen they told us it was impossible when they bankrupted big oil in or near 1980.

I can start a business, get everyone to throw their money in, I can become a vendor to that company and I can suck everyones money dry, and theres not a thing they can do about it.

When your government does this to you, its time for war. They passed anti proffiteering laws, they are not upholding them, and they are still expecting US to do our part, while overpaying for oil they PUMP OUT FROM UNDER OUR FEET

RISE UP TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR COUNTRY
      • NONYA 5 mths ago
OR you can believe the REAL truth. THE COMBINED ECONOMY IS BEING SUPPRESSED, so free enterprise does not sink the billionares who are controling the entire import.
      • Mike 5 mths ago
Oil companies will simply profit from this. I am buying a bike and growning my own food. Once the solar panels are up in the house they can raise the price of oil and gas to whateer they want I wont be paying for it anyways.

Iran will never be convinced that the Europeans and Americans really mean business with their warnings and sanctions until Europe and the United States stop buying Iranian oil and gas and threaten sanctions against anyone else who does buy from Iran. This means that the Iranians will always feel secure, because they know that the American economy and lifestyle is built on low international oil and gas prices and no American voter could live without a car.

The Iranians are the new infidels. Allah does not approve of Iran and will let it be destroyed if it continues it's current course of actions.

BTW, by totally obliterating Iran, you would achieve unchallenged domination of Saudi Arabia on Middle East and consequently among all Muslim in the world. Sounds great, until you figure out where from are all those radical preachers in West and South Asia. Or at least who is their main financier.

never mind what a "skirmish" would do to the world, what about the oil supply? The ruling elite arent even tried to hide it anymore...

Brenda M needs to take her bible stories written by man, same as all other religeous writings, and go away. Religeous beleifs have killed more people over the centuries than all the wars and disease outbreaks put together....and it still continues.......FACT... open your eyes people
      • Iron Angel 5 mths ago
Religious beliefs haven't killed one person, man has killed man using a multitude of reasons and excuses including 'religion' to justify their actions. Mostly barbaric totalitarian leaders Stalin (20 million, Hitler (Directly responsible for the deaths of over 46 million Europeans), Mao Zedong (4.5 million) . and nations have fought wars to kill, rape and murder to take their land and possessions. In many wars nations were convinced that god or God was on their side in the conflict. WWI wasn't fought over religious beliefs, nor was WWII. Radical Islam seems to be the only "religion" doing the killing over "religion' in today's world. One day every knee shall bow and every tong confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Believe what you want... time will tell and maybe sooner than we all think.
      • Chuck 5 mths ago
you forgot to mention how many people the catholic church has killed or caused the deaths of, call them religeous fanatics or whatever you want, romans used the religeous theme to murder masses, and so did the british, the muslims, catholics, baptists, etc... also, or would you just not like to know about that cause it goes against your religeon? Hitler used it for an excuse to murder the jewsish people, Napoleon used it for religeous reasons... do I need to go on? All in the name of their particular lord...

LOL America held by the balls and you people let these idiots remain in office? Republican and democrat alike , traitors. Wanna know what the solution is? Instead of spending 600bln on defense simply release a statement declaring that any hostile action will result in a nuclear war with the country or origin. Then take about 300bln , build a city somewhere in the US , fill it with as many physics and engineering students as possible and direct them to construct a viable alternative energy infrastructure / source. Cut subsidies and corporate welfare checks in order to pay for the implementation of said source. When finished , reallocate money back to defense , producing weapons using said new power source.

My parents generation are complete f#$^$ing idiots.
