‘Sleepy Hollow’ Ratings Return Up, ‘Shark Tank’ Down & ‘Grimm’ Rises

With the Season 4 finale of MasterChef Junior last week, Fox brought back a blast from the relative past last night to fill the 8 PM slot with the return of Sleepy Hollow (0.9/4). Back for the second half of its third season and now moved from Thursday nights, Ichabod Crane and crew picked things up from last year’s November 19 midseason seemingly fatal finale with a flashback or two to colonial times and a visit to another dimension.

Ratingswise, the supernatural procedural had a 12% rise from its 9 PM last original, which faced off against the likes of Scandal and The Blacklist. However, midseason-to-midseason, last night’s Season 3 Sleepy Hollow return was down a hard 44% from its Season 2 January 5, 2015 return, which was on a relatively competitive Monday. In its second week now on Fridays, lead-out Second Chance (0.6/2) declined a tenth.

In near full Big Game 50 mode, CBS gave Hawaii Five-O and Blue Bloods the night off to rock out with the Super Bowl’s Greatest Halftime Shows (1.1/4) as the promo machine for Sunday’s Broncos and Panthers match revved up. While understandably down 45% among the demo from Tuesday’s 2-hour Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials, the Halftime special was actually up 10% from the 2-hour average of the repeats of last week’s dramas. Otherwise, CBS’ night kicked off with a semi-steady Undercover Boss (1.2/4), which dipped 8% from its January 29 show. The net was number #1 in overall viewers on Friday with an audience of 6.08 million and with its 1.2/4 rating tied ABC’s 1.2/5 for the 18-49 top spot.

For the third week in a row, ABC had the top show of Friday night with Shark Tank (1.4/5). However, top this week didn’t mean what it meant last week with the reality entrepreneurial series’ ratings stock dropping 18% from its season high of January 29. Comedies Last Man Standing (1.2/4) and the semi-Community reunion episode of Dr. Ken (1.0/3) were respectively even and down 9% among the 18-49s. Newsmag 20/20 (1.2/4) jumped up 20% in the biggest demo rise of the night and winning the 10 PM slot over Dateline (1.0/3), which was down 29% from last week’s Making A Murderer-fueled season high.

The earlier part of NBC’s Friday prime saw Caught On Camera With Nick Cannon (0.9/3) even with its last original of January 22. On the other hand, Grimm (0.9/3) rose 12% in the demo from last week. Perhaps more impressive for the sometimes shaky drama was that it was up 15% in viewers to 4.38 million – that’s the best its done this fifth season.

Week 2 of the new seasons of The Vampire Diaries (0.4/1) and The Originals (0.4/1) saw the former dip a tenth while the latter stayed even.
