Smoke from dump fire blankets parts of Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Foul-smelling gray smoke is covering areas around Jamaica's seaside capital as a fire smolders at a sprawling garbage dump.

Smoke from the solid waste dump in Kingston is covering parts of the capital, but mostly is blowing southwest to blanket the bedroom community of Portmore.

It's the second major fire at the open-air, solid waste dump in recent weeks. Last month, another fire burned there for about a week.

Environmentalists say there has been virtually no control over what is unloaded at the Riverton City dump, so all manner of industrial and commercial waste burns when it catches fire.

Jamaica's emergency management office advised residents Tuesday to report to a health facility if they experience respiratory distress.
