    Snow church opens in Bavaria

MITTERFIRMIANSREUT, Germany (AP) — A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria — a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.

The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.

The structure was bathed in blue light as it opened Wednesday evening with a blessing from Dean Kajetan Steinbeisser.

But when the ancestors of today's villagers built the first snow church in 1911, they weren't thinking just of architectural achievement.

Steinbeisser says: "It was meant as an act of provocation — believers from the village got together and built a snow church because they didn't have a church here."

It looks very nice, but I like to think of a church as the group of people rather than the building or structure where they meet. Material things really aren't all that important in the grand scheme of things.

Thats the beauty. Its the building, and the congregation. The Church built the Church!

I was in Germany while in the Army. I'd like to go again but as a civilian so I can see the country from the ground instead of the top of a tank. It's a beautiful country. The people are nice too.

I always like the traditional Congregational churches in New England, undersated elegance, simple and pleasing. I've been into quite a few of them.

Those Catholic churches are great, so many alter-boys for the priests' pleasure.

in 1907, 34 citizens of Mitterfirmiansreut founded a church building society, but the project of a new Church stopped short for financial reasons. The nearest Church was in Mauth, one and a half hours walk away. It was therefore often not possible to visit the church regularly old people and women with children. The winter 1910 / 1911 was very rich in snow, calculated to Christmas Eve a snowstorm raged, and no one from the village was not able to Mauth.

To call attention to the plight of the faithful in the secluded Mitterfirmiansreut, the idea came up to build at least a church out of snow. Construction began in the ice-cold February 1911 – men and women from the place cut blocks from the abundant solid snow and coated together like bricks. Cold nights, the each other getürmten snow blocks found a so fixed link, that one could tackle even bow and along the lines of the Passau Cathedral erected two towers at the front. The first worship in the Church of the snow was held on 28 March 1911.

The snow Church held only until the spring, but the project caused a stir far beyond, the Bavarian Forest. Numerous donations to build a proper Church, received a a photo of the snow Church appeared even in a US magazine. in 1923 a stone School Chapel could be built in the place of the Church of the snow, which was dedicated in 1925 and 1932 extended to the present-day church of Expositur. Thus, the builders churches of snow had reached their goal.

What a waste of time. You worship anywhere, nothing in the bible says you HAVE to go church.

Most interesting, beautiful, the original villagers wanted a church so they built one of snow, proves how religious, faithful they were in their beliefs! If only they were that way today!

I wish this article said more about the reasons why Bavarians, of all people, weren't able to have their own church. You are talking about the most Catholic province in Germany, and one of the most religious. Were the villagers Protestants, perhaps, so the Catholics wouldn't let them build? Was there some sort of zoning law that the villagers couldn't meet? What was the reason? This article is a stub; someone expand it please.

Not at all religious but that is a beautiful piece of architecture.
