Ganso scores the goal of his life... well, almost

Paulo Henrique Ganso handed Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari a timely reminder of his talents last weekend.

The 24-year-old was a former team-mate of Neymar at Santos, but while the poster boy of Brazilian football has gone onto join Barcelona, Ganso has failed to hit the heights many expected of him.

Now plying his trade at Sao Paulo, the playmaker - nicknamed "The Goose" - has fallen out of favour at international level.

But he will have certainly caught the eye of Scolari ahead of next summer's World Cup with his display in his side's 1-1 draw with Botafoga at the weekend.

Ganso's sensational run immediately drew comparisons with Archie Gemmill's famous goal for Scotland against Holland in the 1978 World Cup, only the Brazilian failed to find the net.

Slaloming his way past a host of defenders with ease, Ganso has his head in his hands when his effort crashes against the post before being cleared to safety.

The greatest goal that never was? It's got to be up there.

Ganso's effort at the weekend was set against the backdrop of growing unrest among players in the league over an overcrowded fixture schedule.
