    Solar Storms May Disrupt Gadgets

U.S. government scientists are cautioning users of telecom and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions from a likely magnetic sun storm over the next few days.

"The magnetic storm that is soon to develop probably will be in the moderate to strong level," said Joseph Kunches, a space weather scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.

According to Kunches, solar storms can affect telecom and GPS satellites, and people as far south as Wisconsin might be able to see the storms' resulting aurora. Usually the aurora borealis, called the northern lights, are limited to northern latitudes, but the energy of this storm's colliding energized particles may broaden the display.

The increasing frequency of solar flares happen when energy stored in twisted magnetic fields, usually above sunspots, is suddenly released. The result is a burst of radiation across the spectrum, from radio waves to x-rays and gamma rays.

Solar activity has caused minor disruptions in the past. In 1989, a solar storm took down the power grid in Quebec, Canada, leaving about six million people without power for several hours.

The largest solar storm recorded took place in September 1859, when communications infrastructure consisted of mostly telegraph equipment. That storm caused a giant aurora that was visible as far south as the Caribbean Islands.

A similar magnitude solar storm today could cause up to $2 trillion in damage around the world, according to a 2008 report by the National Research Council.

"I don't think this week's solar storms will be anywhere near that. This will be a two or three out of five on the NOAA Space Weather Scale," said Kunches.

There have been three solar explosions from the sun already this week, but the first one passed the earth with little impact. However, the second one, Kunches said, "seems to be stronger." If that trend continues when the third one passes earth, it could be more disruptive to the Earth's magnetic field.

At this time, Kunches stressed, it is equally likely the second blow may not be stronger.

As a practice, the Space Weather Prediction Center alerts power grid managers of upcoming solar events so they can plan for them. The next peak, called a solar maximum, is expected in 2013.

"We're coming up to the next solar maximum, so we expect to see more of these storms coming from the sun over the next three to five years," Tom Bogdan, director of the center, said.

To everybody who is reading this site and its comments, I want to state something that you may wish to know. The Sun's rotation bands vary tremendously. They do not move evenly. The rotation at the North and South Poles is 35 days. The rotation at the Equator is 25 days. This is why the last Magnetic Storm, which was located below the Sun's Equator, didn't bother things too much. It would have affected Southern Latitudes below our own Equator more than it would have affected anything above it. However, since we are still in summer North of our Equator - anything at the Sun's Equator, or above, will be facing us. If a sizable Magnetic Storm occurs at the Sun's Equator or above within the next few weeks or months before autumn, or until the Earth tilts on its Axis and our Southern Hemisphere is exposed instead, the reports which are being 'guessed' at may come to pass. The best reason NOT to panic is that all kinds of Cosmic Waves have been hitting the Earth for thousands of years. We are, and have been, surrounded by so many protective things: The inner and outer Van Allen Radiation Belts, The Earth's own Radiation Field, and - thin as it may be, our own Atmosphere. I very personally believe that unless something is already known which is coming to our side of the Sun, we may only end up with a slightly uncomfortable bump in our road and Technology will hardly be affected - if it is affected at all. Let us all hope that it will be just that simple. All The Best, EVERYONE!

"Our side of the SUN." The Sun has sides?

        Already?
      • NATO 9 mths ago
Yes, I had forgotten, Mobius in on the other side.

Um! That would be the dark side of the Sun then?

Financial markets are crashing and the world economy is facing major challenges....imagine not being able to use your Blackberry for a few hours too!!!! The horror, the horror.....

Oh, look. This article appears to have attracted the conspiracy crazies. Come on, people, it's just a natural phenomenon. Nobody's making this up to fool you, nobody's controlling the weather, and it's not some evil omen of impending doom. Grow up.

Normally I wouldn't even respond to something like this, but....I mean, jeez. It's basically a weather report, except it's weather from the sun instead of the atmosphere. I saw an aurora in Ohio about 8 or 9 years ago, and nothing catastrophic happened afterward. Calm down, folks.

No it isn't,,, it's caused by global warming! It has never happened like this in the history of the sun!

Oh no, this means the I-phone loonies won't be able to watch videos of dancing cats, text their Facebook friends every 2 minutes and download apps that will allow them to use their phones to wipe their #$%$ How will they survive the week?

solar storms are not new, We have them every year, the only reason it,s geting to be a big deal is that most of everything that we use today have chips in it and the power source that the chips use is in the mico use,so get out your old tube tv and raido an your all set.or just unplug and get off the grid for a day or two .

And we're all really sure that 'the big powers that be' wouldn't think of creating a Diversion from the imploding economic crisis, especially with riots in Europe. We all know HAARP couldn't affect communications because it's a harmless batch of wires... Or a really big stun gun, depending on who uses it for what...Just an awfullly convenient time for a Disruption, and we all do trust the governments and Money Powers to act in our best interests 'cause they're so nice and good to us...

"Gosh, golly, gee whiz, I trust them!" I also have a floating plastic island for sale if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind property!

Better get that tin-foil back on your head!!!

Joy, HAARP IS A WEAPON WHICH ABSOLUTELY MUST BE BOUNCED TOWARD ITS TARGET. Off the Atmosphere, back to the ground, or water - (that was proven during its short-range testing in the Pacific) - and then back upstairs and so on until it hits, or comes within range, of its target. HAARP does a lot more Electromatic tricks and Damage than most other Countries are even aware of. If HAARP's full potential were to leak beyond the protection of 'Black Projects', any Country and/or Nation which is hostile toward the United States would send their entire Stockpile at us for ANY reason you can name: From Fear to Religion --- just to name two.

Thanks, agree with you, Campbell. Researching gov't cover-ups on civilian testing gives a person a sense of distrust with big money / power / politics. Usually takes 30 - 40 years before the truth is known. (Chemical testing in the 1950's - 60's is one example.)

Everything happening in the world today, is all leading to 2012. In the end, survival will be all that matters.

2012 Suck and stick to your liver.

Sweetness, I dunno if you've looked around lately, but survival has been all that matters for millions of years now.

After the aurora borealis is actually seen. There will be some type of world-wide catastrophe. Wait and watch.
    • Salvador  •  9 mths ago
San Francisco Bart GPS system black-out last night, it could have been from the Solar Storms.
    • Martha  •  9 mths ago
Yawn. Until I see aurora in Indiana, I'm gonna hazard a guess that we'll live. And if we get aurora in Indiana, I'll be the one outside taking all the pretty pictures while the Chicken Littles of the world hide under their desks with their laptops and blog about the end of the world.
